1990 penny problem

    I have a 1990 penny that has a strange color to it. Can anyone help

    Someone dipped it in acid

    That is the color of the Zinc core. Cannot tell from photo if is is altered or genuine.

    I found it in a penny role last night at work. I get alot of silver coins. But this one caught my eye.

    If it was ever dipped in acid, it happened long enough ago for Zinc pest (the dark spot on the head) to corrode the surface.

    I'm going to guess and say at some point someone dipped it in acid but I'm no expert and I'm sure others will comment about what they think.

    Keep in mind that pennies 1982 to date are 99.2% zinc with a copper layer. Acid could easily eat away the copper. Could you give us a better close-up?

    Thanks Eric! I'm going to try it to see how "original" the surface looks. Once you see a genuine unplated cent in a slab, you will not consider anything that is not "fresh and lustrous." A plating "job" that is silver color is not even close.
