Roman emperors were more like imperators than kings - supreme commanders of the republic. There were different forms of dictatorships, juntas and triumvirates throughout roman history but they mostly came after the republic (other than the 7 kings), most would consider them more advanced political systems...

That system also brought them Hadrian, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, Vaspasian/titus, Antoninus Pius, Drusus, Germanicus.... Caligula was responsible for setting up Claudius for his military campaigns, he was not among the worst rulers.

I dunno. History is, well, history. We should study it in order to avoid the same pitfalls, but otherwise it's still history. I am fond of the Republican issues as well as the Imperial issues. Good and bad. BTW, it seems not enough people know history or learn from it, so we repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Ask most anyone under the age of 50 any historical question and you will see what I mean.

Let's try to avoid any further political messages/debates before it gets ugly, please.
