finally got a coin in 2016. a whole month between coins.....man, that was brutal. didn't have a gratian and didn't have this reverse type. not a bad lookin' coin really. one of my few AE2 coins as well....another plus for me. Gratian, AE2, 379-383 AD O: D N GRATIA_NVS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, R: REPARATIO-REIPVB Emperor standing facing, head left, Victory on globe in left hand, right hand raising kneeling female TCON in exergue, Arles mint, 23mm x 25mm, 4.7g RIC IX, 20a feel free to post your gratians or your "REPARATIO-REIPVB"s.
Great looking coin with a very attractive sand patina. Nice find! Those AE2's feel good in hand. I've had one very nice one of Mag Max, but not Gratian.
His coins are usually attractive. Gratian (367- 383 A.D.) Æ 21 O: D N GRATIA-NVS P F AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: VIRTVS ROMANORVM, Roma seated facing, head left, holding globe and spear,Θ and Φ at sides, anta in ex. theta and phi officina Antioch Mint 2.5g RIC 50b(2)
Nice, i still don't have one of him, and I haven't got a new coin since November.. but have probably been the underbidder at least 10 times lol..
Here are 2 coins of Gratian: The first has a leaf on the exergue, whereas the second has Concordia with a triple G for August on the reverse.
Yeeeehaaaa ... you're up and running in 2016!! => you're no longer a 2016 coin-virgin!! Gratian, eh? .... well, I only have one humble example of that dude ... ... oh, and that's Victory with wreath and palm on the reverse
VERY nice AE-2 of Gratian Chris!!! My poor little AE-4's are impossible for me to photograph at the moment...but they are just the average common types anyway...
Did someone call? Ah Gratian, the dandy boy who ticked the legions off by dressing up as a barbarian warrior. A similar analogy would be if the President of the USA dressed up like an ISIS fighter. . Needless to say, when M.M. showed up no one stuck their neck out for the boy and he was swiftly executed by M.M.'s magister militum. And he showed so much promise early on! Very nice coin, Chris. Here's mine.
I've always thought of her as the personification of the republic. She wears a radiate crown, which is indicative of royalty among the Romans - so she's no ordinary woman. The emperor raises her up and the reverse inscription reads "The Restoration of the Republic."
