Carausius, in his attempt to assert his equality with, and acceptance as a co-Augusti by the legitimate Dyarchal Augusti Diocletian and Maximian, issued other coins that included the titulature AVGGG (the three Augusti) as part of the reverse legend. RIC V (2), Carausius, No. 335 Obverse: IMP C CARAVSIVS P AVG Reverse: PAX AVGGG | S .....P | C James
Nice, mine is the more common type. Carausius (287 - 293 A.D.) ÆAntoninianus O: IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: PAX AVG, Pax standing left, holding olive-branch and sceptre; S in left field; P in right field. Camulodunum(?) Mint 4.53g 23mm RIC 475
I always like seeing Carausius coins. They do not come up for sale very often. Mine does not have the triple G. CARAUSIUS Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP C CARAVSIVS PF I AVG, draped, cuirassed, and radiate bust r REVERSE: PAX AVG, Pax stg. l. holding olive branch & vertical scepter, S P in l. & r. fields Struck at Camulodunum 290-3 AD 3.58g, 23.8 mm RIC 482 However, poorer condition Carausis in my collection may have the triple G, but since the condition is so poor I cannot say for sure. CARAUSIUS Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP C M CARAVSIVS AVG, radiate and draped bust right REVERSE: / PAX AVG (AVGGG [?]), Pax standing left, holding branch and transverse sceptre Struck at Uncertain British or Continental mint 287-293 AD 2.4g, 17/19mm RIC 899
I like the portrait on this one, it doesn't have a triple G. I do have a Maximianus with a triple G knocking around somewhere.
Bing, I'm pretty sure that the mint that produced your second coin did not use the GGG option or strike for the other two. Since you said you 'love' to see his coins, I'll show the good and the bad. I believe, for the most part, the uglier ones are more rare but the demand for ugly coins is low to very low. My GGG is as nice as I have seen. Like Bing's second one 'Continental' or Rouen??? GGG from C obverse PFI AVG C mint Pax GGG PF AVG C mint Pax just one G P AVG Pax overstruck on Victorinus Salus London Felicitas London Pax Virtus mint? There are many rare Carausius types which we rarely see and sell high even for ugly coins. I buy what I find being sold as trash of types I don't have but there are more Pax than anything.
Interesting 3G type Jamesicus. And far above is the type featuring the three busts of the "fellows" emperors. Mind you, I don't have neither of them My only Carausius is a more common one, as many others have. Just as a side note it's featuring Moneta, but with a typo (MONITA). One of my dream coins would be a denarius of his, featuring the she wolf suckling twins on reverse....quite rare and pricey, but one can dream !! Carausius, Antoninianus Colchester mint ? IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate bust right MONITA (sic) AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopia 3,64 gr Ref : RCV # 13629v, Cohen # 178 var, RIC, cf #867 Q
When you get a Carausius GGG you need Diocletian and Maximian too: Carausius, 23 mm. Diocletian, 24-22 mm. Maximian, 24-22 mm. The last two were bought together in London 20 years after acquiring the Carausius. Some of us have the advantage of having collected for over twenty years. If you have been at it for only a few years, you can look forward to filling in your want list over time, although it may be a long time.
