Q. David Bowers's book on treasure hoards promises hours of engaged reading. Some of the stories are known in the hobby: The SS Central America, the SS Brother Jonathan, and the SS Republic. Here are their true histories in complete and correct detail, presented in lively and enlivening writing, as only QDB can deliver. Lost and Found: Coin Hoards and Treasures. Whitman Publishing, 2015. 468 pages. $39.95. We all easily imagine finding hundreds or thousands of silver and gold coins. However, Chapter 21 is "Notable Single-Coin Finds." A Willow Tree Shilling, ... a 1794 Dollar,... an 1804 Dollar, ... the unique 1870-D Half Disme.... Fourteen vignettes in all. No collection could reflect American numismatics without fakes, frauds, and hoaxes, discussed in Chapter 26. There, you can read about Republic of Texas Gold Coins, Wells-Fargo Large Cents, Western Assay Bars (of course), Bordello Tokens, Mormon Gold "Patterns" and more. At 8-1/2 cents per page, you would be challenged to find a better bargain.
Thanks for the review, great to hear! I just got 5 technical books, grading, counterfeit detection etc, for birthday and Christmas, that I am working through. Lost and Found is will be my next purchase after I finish my 'required reading'.
Something I love reading about. Always hope I'll run into a stash down now my cellar too. Would love to find something buried ca 1805 or so with some chain cents wreath cents hi grade early silver etc
I found 11 cents (a dime and a cent) under the carpet in my house when I put in hard wood. Just for kicks I left the same coins under the wood.
