What would you grade it?

  1. MS 65

  2. MS 64+

  3. MS 64

  4. MS 63+

  5. MS 63

  6. Lower MS/AU/Details

image.jpg image.jpg I started a thread about this coin in the error coins forum, but didn't ask for opinions on grade. Also, I know that not everyone collects error/variety coins so I thought I'd get more opinions here. I took some additional images after dark. These are better.

There is a small ding at the corner of his mouth, but the reeding contact mark on his neck is very distracting. The rest of the obverse is very clean and luster full. There is a tiny ding on the vertical bar of the second T of STATES. Otherwise, the eagle and fields are sharp.

I'm not sharp on grading mint state coins, but minus the few dings, I think this would easily be an MS65 or better coin. My question is how far will that contact mark on the neck drag down the grade? 64, 63 or lower even?

    I voted 63. 65 without the dings.

Absolutely. Marks in prime focal areas are always going to drag a grade down. I agree with 63ish.

I voted 63. Pretty coin if not for the contact marks. The rim ding on the neck just draws the eye and the ding by the mouth holds it back. There appears to be a small spot on the high cheek bone too. The fields are extremely clean on the obverse. It's an attractive coin, IMO.

My thoughts exactly. Maybe I'm getting better grading MS coins.

I think MS63 is safe, too bad on where the contact marks are, it's a very lovely coin otherwise.

It is not a DDO. And DDOs and Type B reverses are varieties and not error coins.

    No DDO.

Yes, I understand the difference between errors/varieties. This is a type B reverse, aka proof reverse on a business strike coin. That makes it a design variety. However, there isn't a variety coin sub forum. That's why it was started in the error coins sub forum.
