What do you guys think of this $20 Saint? How well do you think it is graded? If the coin is at least 63, then it is very cheap for a 1911.
its hard to tell from the pics, but i wouldnt buy it at ms-64 prices! Also, anyone who refers to a PCGS price guide an a non PCGS coin is only trying to screw someone IMHO then to top it off, he quotes the PCGS price guide yet again for an ms-65 coin, which isnt even part of the auction. He is only trying to trick a buyer into thinking its worth alot more then its not. Just for this trickery, i would thing the coin might only be an au-58 or so ... this guy is not to be trusted IMHO!!!!
Yeah, the seller does overhype the coin quite a bit. There is a big price jump from 62 to 63 and on up in the 1911. The problem is that the difference between a 58 and a 64 can be very minimal...just the slightest rub will make the difference, even on a mark-free coin.
I really had no intention in taking a chance on the Saint. I just thought it was an interesting coin/auction for discussion. It ended up bringing nearly $1250, which would be a bargain for a true 64, but a lot of money for anything lower than a 63.
I thought the reverse looked a little rough, unless the back of the slab was scratched up. I couldn't have brought myself to bid on it.
