I have been going through lots and lots of pennies as of recent and have been finding lots of 70's pennies with San Fransisco mint marks. Are they worth setting aside?
Whenever I find an "S" mint memorial cent I always keep them for no particular reason. They're not really worth much over face value, but they always hold a special place in my heart. That said, if it is a 1970-S small date, it can be worth a pretty good amount. Check out this link to differentiate between large and small date: http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
Personally, I keep all 1968-1974 cents from San Francisco because here in NYC you don't see them very often. And what NSP said also
I was just wondering i have gone through probably 1500 to 2000 pennies and found around 10-15 70's pennines with S mint marks
I can see you are quite new to the forum. Welcome! And let me give you your first friendly correction. In the coin community, they are called cents, not pennies. Pennies are from the UK and the US adapted a slang for them. And don't feel bad. Everyone one of us got this speech when we started collecting.
We get lots of S cents in Seattle, but I see few from Philly. Still looking for a wide AM...hardly ever get a P to even look at.
Thanks for the information. I have collected coins for around a year now and have figured out that there are many things to learn in the hobby.
Being from Nebraska I see tons and tons of Denver minted coins, also quite a few of Philly coins but S mint marks are not so common.
Thom McAn called their shoes "penny loafers". Some wrappers have "50 Pennies" written on them. Why is it called a "Penny Arcade"? Chris
When I roll searched, if I didn't need it to fill a hole I put them back in circulation for another collector to find.
I save all wheat pennies and yes, real collector's call them pennies and not cents I haven't seen an S penny in circulation for some time. I save all loose change as I'm a change hoarder. As I almost always use electronic banking, credit or ATM card; I use very little money these days. Thus, I may only collect a dollars worth of coins each month; most from my wife.
What is this all about guys? In the US it's called a cent and the UK has pennies. Sure we use penny as a slang term but it is technically incorrect. @Clutchy is spot on so I don't see why his statement is being critiqued?
I agree with you. But you are not going to convince everybody. It's up to each individual to choose which term to use.. even if it's incorrect. Here is a thread I created early 2015.. it got out of hand at times! https://www.cointalk.com/threads/cent-vs-penny-what-is-the-correct-term.259971/
I think why confusion is so ingrained in us is because of England lovin' Ben Franklin... "A cent saved is a cent earned" just doesn't have a ring to it lol
Cent is correct but I don't feel it's polite to correct people over it. It is no big deal. I use both terms.
Here in the snowy east they are few and far betwixt, so I keep them. Found a couple of S mint wheaties last week in roll searches.
