What do you think: 1945 S Washington Quarter worth sending in?

Obvious situation (grading from a photo) aside, do you think this quarter is worth sending in to get graded? Has to be a 66 or higher to even be worth the effort...

That depends. By "send it in," do you mean send it in to my mail box?

I'd say it's got a very high chance of hitting 66. Slightly above average strike, dripping with eye appeal, original surfaces. I'm assuming the luster is on par with everything else I just mentioned?

 

I'm not sure that I would argue with a 66, it's certainly a pretty coin, but I see more of a technical 65. The rub off of the jaw line and the high hairline limits it a bit for me even though it does add to the eye appeal in a way.

Hard to tell from these images, I'm with frank on this one .

 

Seems to be a pretty mushy reverse strike. The OLLAR of DOLLAR and the leaves above the letters, especially the one above the R, should be stronger as well as the UNI in UNITED and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The fields look great, great eye appeal, great skin (as @physics-fan3.14 fan likes to call it) and I don't think that's rub on the jaw line and hair line...i think that shadows from lighting. If it is rub then you're AU at best and none of the rest of the typical rub areas are showing any signs of friction. I think this one tops at 65, but I'd love to see what it does grade at so I say SEND IT IN!

Very nice coin for sure.... not being a quarter collector it's out of my wheelhouse , but I think it would squeeze by a 65+ or * to a 66.
I concur with the others sweet coin plenty of eye appeal .

I think eventually I will send it in...when I get together a decent group of worthy candidates. Or maybe when I get my most recent submission back from PCGS.

In hand, it definitely has a pearlescent tone to it, and almost a matte finish. There is no evidence of wear at all on any surfaces, but I agree that the strike could be stronger.

 

This is one where you flex your photographic muscle to present it in the *worst* possible light, to try and capture every detail that might actually be a detraction from grade. Maybe a single direct light, no diffusion. Frankly, to talk MS67 from an online image I'd prefer the images to be 1000px in diameter or better. What I see here is promising, certainly at least one to throw in the batch if you have another line left on the order form.

 

That is a very nice looking '45-S. It does have the mushiness of strike described above, but that is nothing particularly new for S mint. Personally, I think FROM THE PIX, that it is technically a 66, but this is one of those gray areas... If it had even a dusting of attractive toning on it, it would be a lock 66. In this case, aside from the unattractive dark spots under the eagle's left wing, the toning is neutral, neither adding or subtracting from the coins looks, and I would call it closer to a "white" coin. The TPG's tend to be stricter as to technical grading on "white" coins. I was just looking at the current PCGS price guide, and even a 65+ is not worth the hassle/monetary outlay.

If you don't need the money now, I would suggest putting the coin in an album (or an area) where it is likely to tone up over time, and send it in after it's gotten some toning on it. OTOH, IMO it's clean enough to take a shot at it now if you don't want to hold on to it. Please let us know what you do with it, and if you do submit it, please let us know what it grades.

 

I would say it's actually very well struck for a '45 S.

 

@Skyman - I do plan on selling it. I feel like the coin is in that sweet spot right between "too nice to trust leaving it up to an auction as a raw coin" and "maybe the TPG doesn't like it enough to warrant sending it in to get slabbed." So probably I'll end up hanging on to it for a bit and sending it in the next time I feel like giving a TPG some money. If I had remembered it in time, would have sent it with a recent PCGS piggyback submission. If I do end up sending it in, will definitely dig up this thread and add the results.

 

My opinion is that the coin has the luster, surfaces, and eye appeal of a MS67, but the reverse strike holds it at MS66 for me.

 

IMO should go 66. Higher depends on what the grader had for lunch, relative humidity and atmospheric pressure, how the Dow is doing, etc etc...
