Markus has it correct. Clear S top, filled S bottom.

I am not an expert on SBA Dollars but to me the bottom photo looks like the carry over from the Type 2 1979 S SBA. Neither have Bulging Ends on both ends of the S and a Clear S is not a verifier for a 1981 S SBA Type 2 (IMHO).

1981 S SBA will have bulging flatten round end on one if not both ends of the S. I also find this to be one of those mystery coins looking for further thoughts.

Well I know this is a type 2

Type ones can look like the one in the second pic all the way up to filled and almost looks like a blob.

I have seen varying degrees of the filled type Markus, some are sharp around the edges and some just blobs. Probably varying degrees of die state. Good update.

All 81 TY-2 mint marks are flat and frosted.

My initial thoughts were that both were Type 1 MM. Neither looks like a T2.
