Today I went through 16 rolls of nickels and this is what I found. 1-1939 1-1940 2- silver war nickels 39 coins from the fifties 23- 1976-D that were BU and the best find I have had in a long time a 1990-D with no FS and I grade it au-58 it was a good day. Bruce.
I went here to find out http://www.collectorscorner.org/pocket.html but they said no price available maybe someone here knows. Bruce.
Awesome Bruce! I have yet to find my 1990 D missing FS, I'm jeolous! If you have a chance and its not too much trouble post a pic! I'd like to see it! All out of 16 rolls! Just incredible!
Thanks ,Im a computer idiot and I am still working on pictures but as soon as I can I will post a picture. Bruce.
Wow, awesome Bruce! Very nice finds. :thumb: Please don't mind me asking, but I thought it was a good thing if a coin was FS? Or am I wrong? Sorry, just don't know. Awesome finds! :thumb: Phoenix
The FS they are referring to is the designer initials Felix Schlag which is located right below Jefferson's bust. The designer's initials where added on the nickle in 1966. Hope this explanation helps. Lou
OH! I thought they meant Full steps when they said FS. Thanks for the explanation! :thumb: Would this be the result of overpolished dies? Wondering that. I know, was wondering that. Got me confused. Very nice finds again Bruce! :thumb: Phoenix
They were just rolls like you can get at any bank I was just lucky, I am not sure why the designer's initials are not there maybe some of our members can tell us. Bruce.
Nice finds, Bruce. I especially like the BU 1976-D's. I would think the missing designer initials are the results of either a filled die, or a worn die. I don't recall ever hearing about a die variety that featured missing designer initials. Keep up the searching, and let us know what else you find. I love hearing about Jefferson nickel circulation finds.
when i got $20 in nickels that one time, i checked 1990D i could find for that error. did you check the prices on ebay?
problem is, this error has never been very well documented. Only a few are known to exist. Additionally the cause of the error has not been determined, whether it was caused by deteriated or worn dies, the dies over polished and detail removed, or ??? Possibly or even rarer, a defect in the hubbing process... If the latter this would be a significant error (in my opinion) I would really like to see this variety examined by the experts for possible catalogue entry.
I got a 38S in my change yesterday. I was so excited even though it's heavily circulated and very dirty. The date and all letters are readable however. I found a Buffalo in a roll a few months ago but as far as finding in circulation, this 38S is the oldest nickel I have found. If only it wasn't so darn dirty *~*Joey*~*
Be sure to check the 39's reverse for the doubled die. Pick up point: Monticello, especially the last O.
