Purchased 3 Unc. 1922 P. Peace Dollars a few day's ago off of Ebay. Researching possible VAMS, This one looks like it is the 1922 P. VAM 4 Doubled Designer Initials and Doubled TR in TRUST. Opinions Welcomed. Thanks.
Hmmm. Ran into an interesting thing while researching this. Nice coin - excellent, near-complete strike for a 1922. Decent obverse with a nice reverse, probably argues for MS64 in hand. The details of your doubling don't *quite* agree with those published at VAMworld. The VAMworld plate detail shows doubling to the southeast, and the doubling on your coin (especially the T) seems more directly south. Now for the fun part. There are a few of these in Heritage's archives, attributed, and I see both directions of doubling (some like yours, some like VAMworld's) in various examples. Now, does that mean there are two different dies involved and the TPG's are just calling both of them VAM-4? Good question.
Thanks for the info! A member of VAM World (Vam Finder) back in 2010 also was inquiring about different VAM 4's. He/She was going to see if there were any distinguishing die-markers to try and separate the real from the ' wannabee's" etc. I don't know if it was ever done or not. Great idea- would be a lot easier to locate die markers etc. * What about the designer's initials on my coin. Doubling is present, but again, is it the VAM 4?
I took a second set of pics- There is also MD on this coin by the Nose and the L I of LIBERTY and in back of the neck. I also highlighted doubling on the initials and letters. *Anyone have a attributed VAM 4 out there with MD on it also?
Checked out this Heritage Auction ( LOT # 10434) 1922 P VAM 4 NGC MS64 has almost identical MD on it as my coin does. The L, I and the base of the Y in LIBERTY and also all around the nose/for-head area.
