Is anyone watching the Heritage Auction?

Is anyone watching the live Heritage Auction at FUN? It might be interesting to discuss as we watch it.

I watched the earlier session this afternoon, and was surprised at how strong a few lots were. I was also surprised at how weak a lot of them were. For example, that foolish dime on a nail got a crazy high bid, but many of the late 19th century proofs were going for weak money (except Trade dollars - they were strong).

Tonight's auction is a lot of interesting collector grade stuff, so it is fun to watch.

What did that nail sell for? I knew it would go for crazy money after all the media coverage.

Barber dimes are up now, and they are weak. Every single one is going for under Numismedia and CU price guide values (some of them are more like half of the retail guide price). These are definitely wholesale prices.

Some of the seated quarters are doing well.

I think in general, the Seated quarters in this auction are more attractive than the Barber dimes. They are doing better, but they are still not going for "retail prices."

Watching these auctions just re-inforces how out of touch the PCGS price guide is - even the PCGS-CAC coins aren't coming anywhere near the retail price guides.

Wow an 1858 MS67 just went for $6500 that does seem low.

Wow the high grade stuff doesn't seem to be doing well at all.

Yikes, did you see the '89 in 68? $6k.... and the 1890 in 68 did the same. Geez, that 1890 was a gorgeous coin.

And the price guide on them both said $24k.

This just seems to be a real weak auction from the ones I've seen. Wednesday night after the holidays didn't seem to be a good decision. I won't be the least bit surprised to see a bunch of this stuff ending up in dealer inventories in the coming weeks

The FUN show is one of the biggest shows of the year. It is always the first week of January.

This auction is just really weak. A lot of the material looks nice - I'm not sure why it is so soft. Is the market in general weak? Are Barbers and Seated material weak? I don't know.

Very true, but I still wouldn't want my stuff to be in the midweek auction portion of the show. The floor bidding seems to be basically nonexistent on the ones I've watched.

With the exception of the highest end stuff it has been a buyers market

Maybe all the big boys blew their money at the Pogue auctions.

This is the first big auction in a while where there isn't a huge name collection ginning up publicity. I think the next Pogue is in February, right?

Ah, the early halves are starting now... material I'm much more familiar and interested in.

Yup next Pogue auction is in Feb.

I have 1 draped bust half. But I am excited for the seated stuff. Halves are my favorite denomination.

I would really like a Flowing Hair Half. I think they are beautiful, but the prices are just a little too high for the grade I want (VF at least). I mostly stick to the Capped Bust halves.

Maybe not for long if you wait for another one of these auctions ;)

Oh man, I really hope prices for everything on the bourse are this weak. It is going to be a fantastic trip if that's the case!

Well, goodnight all - gotta get up bright and early tomorrow to make the annual pilgrimage to Florida.
