I just found this coin yesterday and got super excited ...until i started researching further. (Unfortunately, this has been the norm thus far in my short coin collecting career!) I've yet to find a definitive answer to my question so i thought I'd ask you guys! On my coin LIBERTY is really doubled but can't say IGWT is at all. The date looks clean too. The "S" looks like RPM. I know I've not found "THE" coin I wish it was but is there any monetary value for these coins that are error coins but are not the cherrypicker version?
I'm going to guess your coin displays strike doubling, but there's no way to say for certain without decent photos. There is at least one other DDO known for the date though.
if the word liberty is doubled and mint mark is as well usually means it's Machine doubling but without a pic who knows
To the "Unbaptized", machine doubling is ALWAYS interpreted as a doubled die and the OP's description screams machine doubling especially when the MintMark is mentioned as a possible RPM.
Sorry photo is not the best but maybe it will help. Thx for the replies. I'm guessing this "machine doubling" is worthless?
We have seen many of these on CoinTalk over the years. It has stirred up much debate especially when the persons who find them swear they have the big one!
It doesn't add value to the coin as an error or variety as it isn't from off the dies. Some examples of it can be real cool, though, and that can add value to the coin, but it's just "coolness" value, and not die error or variety value.
It's not what you were hoping for. But I do have to compliment you on the imaging. It's much better than what a lot of people give us to try and make a decision on.
Search coppercoins.com for the die sets. They take excellent pictures to compare to. I tried to post the direct link but it didnt work.
Thank you! I have been on that site before but could not think of the name for the life of me. Appreciate it much
