Hi All, I am new to this group. I have a few coins of similar appearance. It is made of 66% (+/-) copper and weighs 4.02 grams on an average. As far as I can see, these are hand made. It had a layer of rigid black soot like deposit on it. Upon cleaning thoroughly with vinegar and detergent soap, this is what I could find out. Diameter is 2.50 cm.
There are some coins from India that have a similar appearance, but I'm no help identifying it beyond that.
Got it tested (assayed) as they call it wherein you get all the details of the metals once you put it under scanner.
These are all mughal coins with arabic inscriptions. There is nothing etched in urdu, arabic or persian in my coins.
That's why I said that they are similar in appearance and not anything else. Sorry I don't know how to read Urdu,Arabic or Persian.
Neither do I know the above mentioned languages. These were unearthed from a metal pot underground. Must be valuable it seems. Problem is I can't understand what this is actually.
How many were found? If I was you I would start researching the history of your area. As for value, well, if real and something significant and your area doesn't consider them cultural artifacts that belong to the public/government it would probably be fairly valuable. If you don't mind me asking what country are you from?
A good 300 coins were found several years back. I gotta approach the government bodies for more info.
Welcome to the forum. If you ever find out please let me know as I have no idea. For all I know they came from the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire over 500 years ago. good luck! Government bodies, wow are they yours or theirs?
Thanks. I will visit and get the info. I am pretty much stuck at work and also the registration of my new motorcycle is taking a lot of my time. Hope to get to the bottom of this soon.
Referring to the first two photos: at the bottom of the first I see four numbers 1556 (in Hyderabad arabic). The 55 looks like two inverted hearts. You'll find the Hyderabad numerals in the "Standard International Numeral Systems" table in any Krause catalogue. Also in Krause, there's a list of current dates in the various dating systems (AD, AH etc). None of the systems has had a 1556 in the last 3 centuries: yet the piece looks milled! So 1556 may not be a date. I recognise some Arabic letters but there seem to be a lot of dots and lines. A puzzle.
Way to go @ScotsJohnR Thanks for deciphering it. I did not even come close to what you found out. Am sure the rest of it is in hyderabad arabic as well.
