I'm heavily in favor of a VF30 grade. If there is a chance for a VF35, it is solely because of the better condition of the reverse. However, the reverse should not increase the over all letter grade but can raise the numeric grade. The lack of any finess in the hair indicates it is not a XF coin. Only a flat outline exists with no center detail. There is more wear on the bosom than should be for an EF coin, it is nearly flat. The star centers are flat. There should be a few which still have defined segments on them. My biggest concern is: Where did the drapery medallion go? It is completely worn away. It should be recognizable even on an F12 coin. There are some other small irregularities (Rim damage from 6 to 12 0"clock on the reverse) which work against a extra fine grade. I think the VF 30 grade is more accurate. IMHO.
Nice coin. It needs a better holder. I want to call it VF-35 but VF-30 is probably right. About $200.
I will buy any EF-40 bust half you ever want to sell at $100, especially early dates or overdates. The 1812/1 is going to be worth more than a typical 1812. To the OP: your coin appears to be mid-VF (the hair detail isn't strong enough for an EF grade). In your pictures it appears to have been cleaned. If it is darker in hand, the value will be higher. If there are hairlines present, it will be lower. The value for an original VF-30 1812/1 is probably around $300 - $400. If it has been cleaned, the value will be more like the $200 that Larry said.
Thanks all! I am comfortable with a VF-30. as for it being cleaned, it certainly did not happen on my watch,. I've had this coin since about '96, before that it's anyone's guess.
I didn't bring up the cleaning part. It has that look but it's starting to look happy again. After a fresh holder and more years, I feel the coin will go up in value. Not so much if there are hairlines we can't see in the images. It's a nice coin. It would fit in with some that I have.
I was going to go 35 , but figured it was a worn die or soft strike . I really hate grading these from pics but that's why I love these coins .
Keep in mind, these seem to be scans and not pics, so you can't tell what the surfaces actually look like.
I'm in the weak strike 40-45 camp but it is a scan, So it's tough to judge the surfaces. And I'll parrot others I'll take Pre 20's like this for $100 all day long.
Late to the party, but I think VF also, and in the 300-400 range if nice surfaces. Like that overdate!
It makes sense to me because the reverse is mostly there . Most coins receive even wear on both sides , so I go with a improperly hubbed die though I should look this up , but the loss of the drapery doesn't look like wear to me it looks more like it was missing most of it to begin with . IMHO . I'll take pre '20 coins like this foe $125 all day long also .
Dies appear to be nearing the end of life. Much better pics still in the 40-45 camp although the reverse is looking closer to AU with the new pics. Looks like she's recovering nicely from an old cleaning minor scratches nice looking bustie and an over date ta boot I like it a lot.
thanks all! this one was throwing me off also. with the reverse being in better shape, I was having a hard time narrowing down a grade.
I'm in the VF30 camp, for the reasons stated by others, lack of hair details, rim dings, etc... I don't like the scratches in the obverse field. They didn't show up in the original scan, so they might just be on the 2x2 plastic rather than the coin.
Judging by the PCGS Photograde app it looks like it's between VF-20 and VF-25. The reverse looks like it's a higher grade but I am under the assumption that they grade by the lower grade. (Possibly I'm wrong on that and would like to see the opinion of more knowledgeable collectors)
