I bought this 1997 ASE as Natural Toning. I'm now scared that it could be AT (artificial toning), what do you think?

Depending on the premium, I would have bought it, though I admit that I wouldn't be slabbing it just sticking it in the Dansco. Could have been in one of those cardboard "displays."

The question is, "Do you like it?" NT or AT? Who knows! It doesn't look that bad to me. If you didn't pay too much for it, what difference does it make?

At this point it is very pretty but I'm not sure I would put in an album that does not have safeguards against it going overboard and /or eventually becoming way too discolored.

It's in an air-tight capsule, will that help?

That isn't too, too much, but I wouldn't make a habit of it when you are just guessing between NT & AT.

That's about the most I would pay. I would have bought if.

Looks like AT to me. It also looks beautiful. The real question is, are you pleased with it given what you paid for it. If yes, well then, there is no problem. If no, too bad, you're stuck with it.

Ok, I'm bucking the trend here. I see elevated chromatics which is a good indication of natural toning however the muted colors make me think it could have been rim toned only originally then helped along by putting it in a window sill for a few months. I'd say you have a good shot of being able to get it into a righteous slab :)

Less than 20 years? I suppose it could be NT if it started immediately after the strike. NT doesn't happen in 6 months.....

Either way it looks holder toned (cardboard, album etc) with some nice bulls eye progression. Might have been brewing slowly since 97' or it may have been helped along a bit, 6 months in the right holder will do the trick, not hard to do. Doesn't look like it was done in 5 minutes. If the seller has a website or is on Ebay look up their other items in current auctions and their 'completed listings'. If they have a bunch of clown toned coins then there is a good chance of AT and the 'Doctor' is hard at work..

Good point. I'm having a bit of time fitting the color progression on the coin into what's known (we know precisely the hue progression of NT silver), as well, but don't consider me an expert there.

My dealer is old fashion, with no computer. He is a very honest dealer, he told me that he won't put out major cheap problem coins and puts them in his 25 cent bin. He said it came in with his other silver eagles and he set it aside for it's toning.

I am in no way an expert and my coin experience pales compared to you SuperDave. About 6 months ago I spent an evening pulling up Very Nice top tier TPGS slabbed toners. I had been studying toning and reading about that color progression and I may be completely mistaken but the more I looked the more I felt the sequences of colors were all over the place. What I was reading and what I was seeing were just not matching up.

Sometimes all you can do is scratch your head at what gets through.
I am dead serious when I say I could do this obverse in 2 minutes.
