I've been collecting the presidential cover series sets since they began in 2007. Although they have received the "Rodney Dangerfield" award by numismatists, I collect them anyway. I like the history of our great country and these guys were always in the mix. It is not easy to collect these sets as they continue to lose value. The mint continues to sell all the sets from 2009 to 2014 except Lincoln who finally sold out earlier this year. Although the mint has reduced the prices of the 2009 sets to $14.95 and the 2010 sets to $15.95, it hasn't had much effect on demand as they continue to sell for less on ebay. The 10% subscription discount seemed to have no impact on sales in 2014. The attached list provides the initial sales price from the mint, the market value based on sold ebay listings, and the "sold mintages". I did need to take some liberty on market value of sets with little ebay interest. The mintages from 2007 and 2008 came from my inquiry to the mint. The "sold mintages" from 2009 to 2014 came from coinupdate.com. It is my understanding that the mint director prays every Sunday that this program ends with Ford. Interesting story regarding the Presidential Dollar Coin Covers in that the Washington covers sold out within a week or two as multiple folks ordered them by the thousands. One fella on the CU Forums order 2,000 and a couple of other folks ordered 2,500 each. There was also reference to another fella that was sitting on 7,000. The net result was that Household Ordering Limits of 10 per HH were imposed on the John Adams FDCC and all subsequent issues.
Here is the latest update on the dead presidents and yes, they should allow anyone to order them by the thousands! The mint isn't updating the mintages on 2009 presidents but they still seem to be on sale on their website. Slightly off topic, my prayers go out to President Carter on his battle with cancer. He's a good man. Truman has sold out with the reduced minting (14,779). As Eisenhower and Johnson are also limited to 15,000, I'm guessing that they will sell out in the next six months. It will be interesting to see the demand on the dead presidents upon the release of the Reagan cover series. It may increase the value of some of the other guys. Currently, they are quite the laggards.
Here is the beginning of the year update on the dead presidents. Truman was the first sellout since Lincoln. It is currently the most valuable of the cover series with an ebay value of $40/set. I would expect Eisenhower to sell out soon and may be an opportunity for profit in this otherwise profitless enterprise. Best wishes in this new year. In theory, these are assembled from first day of minting coins and as such could qualify for First Day of Issue statue through PCGS. However, you have to be an Authorized PCGS Dealer to submit them.
It boggles the mind that you would need to be a dealer to qualify. Why should that impact first day of issue and why would anyone want to pay to grade one of these guys? Is it a need to lose more on this series?
Actually, the First Day of Issue coins do quite well in the after market as come collectors were paying nice premiums for them. I myself was able to pay for my bulk submissions by selling the extras in the after market. BUT, since the US Mint decided to team up with the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Bank by NOT insisting that the paper buck get eliminated and instead put the squash on producing Presidential Dollars for circulation, the First Day of Issue Registry sets just DIED. These Coin Covers were a great source for some of these First Day of Issue slabs since you didn't have to rush out to the bank on release day and pick out 100 or so coins to submit. It would have been nice if the Treasury Department had told the Federal Reserve to go pound sand but alas, that never happened since "ignorance" appears to be a contagious disease in Washington anymore. I'm not saying that it would be profitable today but what I am saying if that those folks that wanted to extend their First Day of Issue Registry Sets "beyond" that 2011 year could do it using these covers. And to echo your "why would anyone want to pay to grade one of these guys?", why do people pay to have coins graded in the first place? MONEY my friend. Money. Either to bag about the value of a certain coin in a certain grade or to sell the coins that were graded. That is, after all, the ONLY reason the TPG's exist anyway.
99.99% of ALL coins are losers as losing money on a coin purchase/sale is not exclusive to the domain of "Modern Coins". Virtually ANY coin can lose value in the open market.
It's funny Lee, but we all buy into the hype......the hope that our collections will increase in value future wise, but the true reality of it all is that we're all just shooting craps.......some of us better than others, but in essence, we're all gamblers/collectors to a small extent. We all desire to have our collections increase in value, but that isn't always the result. I don't expect mine to increase value wise, but I am having fun putting it together. Someone down the road will sell it for a profit, in that they have nothing staked in it. They know not the value, nor the effort that went together to put this collection together, and as such, will never realize the true value. Who cares? I'll be long gone. Now if they hold onto things for a few years, and do a bit of research, they may realize what it is that they have. I can advise them no further. I've left them instructions.....whether they care to heed them is not known.
The only time I have ever made any money on modern coins was the time when I bought 6 original 1981 TY2 PR sets for $60, b/c the dealer didn't know what he had. I then sold these PR sets for $200 ea.
I have all the FDCC sets released thus far. One each. I also have most of them graded. I plan to keep them until who knows what. With only three more FDCC's to go, this will be the only complete collection series I have. Oh well.
I have three of each of the cover series. It is the biggest loser in my entire collection (Truman excepted). I started buying three at the start and just can't stop (OCD like most collectors). You can add wealth on moderns. In addition to the Truman, you can probably remember the 2011 25th anniversary ASE set (I still have five in an unopened box)? The 2012 silver, clad, and mint sets were winners? And who can forget the Lincoln Chronicles set or the 1995 gold set with the lonely ASE? The Hawaii, Acadia, and Denali pucks were winners? I could continue. Most collectors collect moderns or at least started the hobby by collecting moderns. I still pull stuff out of circulation to add to my collection. It's always fun to check my change. I suspect that most "modern haters" are dealers because the sellers can get their stuff from circulation or the mint.
Why do you need to be an authorized PCGS dealer to submit a dead president if he is still in his sealed white casket?
