Well, I've decided to blast out of the starting-blocks and score myself a sweet chick-coin!! My favourite seller had this gorgeous example, so I decided to start the year off with a bang!! Severina Silvered Antoninianus (Ticinum mint) Date: 275 AD Diameter: 23.1 mm Weight: 4.04 grams Obverse: SEVERINA AVG - Diademed and draped bust of Severina, set on a crescent Reverse: CONCORDIAE MILITVM- Concordia, holding two standards. [Q ?]XXT in ex. (Ticinum mint) References: RIC 8 Other: almost all silvering remaining ... a very sharp coin, well centered on a broad flan (it's sweet) ... she's a pretty lil' thing, eh?
Absolutely beautiful coin, Steve. I'm with JA, probably the best example of the type I've seen as well. I've fallen off that dang wagon with a bang too but I don't plan on sharing my two new coins until they come in, except to say that I have set a new personal record for highest price paid for a single coin.
Very nice example, reverse is the one common though. Mine is the less common reverse. Silvering is under the green crust & not bronze disease. On my list is the denarius of her. Bit scarcer then a Ant. Æ(S) Antoninianus O: SEVERINA AVG, Diademed and draped bust right on a crescent. R: PROVIDEN DEOR, Fides standing right holding two standards, facing Sol standing left holding globe in left and raising right, UXXT in ex. Ticinum mint 22mm 3.5g RIC 9 This coin may have been issued in connection with the introduction of the Sun Cult by Aurelian as the primary religion of the empire and Severina's appointment as its priestess.
Oh dang!! => I forgot to mention that I'd be honoured if you'd show your cool examples ... => show your Severina and/or you may as well post her hubby as well, Aurelian!! ... and here they are ...
Aurelian (270 - 275 A.D.) Æ Antoninianus O: IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG, Radiate and cuirassed bust right. R: ORIENS AVG , Sol advancing left, raising right hand, globe in left, flanked by two captives at feet, txxt in ex Ticinum Mint 2nd Emission. 3rd Officina 3.81g RIC 151
That is a sharp coin. I assume every coin you get in 2016 will be at least this nice. I don't have a Ticinum Severina let alone one that nice. Neither do I have a denarius so I'll settle here for this 8.3g, 25mm as. Some sellers list these as sestertii which seems quite reasonable considering the late date. Hubby? My as of Aurelian is not so nice due to scratches so Ill throw in a denarius as well.
Thanks, gang => wow, you dudes have some fantastic examples!! => hey, thanks for posting your coins (I really do love seeing other people's coins, so I am very appreciative of the extra-effort) ... so far 2016 is one sweet year!! "please" continue to wow me with your cool examples ... I got nuthin' to do at the moment but hit the like button and chat with you sweet ancient coin dudes!!
Hey Gol Happy New Year... and here's mine! Not quite as silvery as yours: I haven't fallen off the wagon yet myself... My travel plans this year are hella-expensive.
Well Stevex, you may have fell off the wagon but landed on your feet with a prime example. Well done!! All I have to add is this Ant. of Aurelian. Nice coins everyone.
This is a Severina year 7 from Alexandria. They are common but I believe desirable. I do not have an Aurelian year seven. Do you?
@stevex6, that's for sure a cool and most exceptionnal coin. I wouldn't call the lady a "chick" though, looking a bit severe, as to my own criteria at least Here is she, in her splendor (I prefer yours on the Ticinium antoninian) !! Severina, Antoninianus minted in Ticinium, 1st officina, AD 275 SEVERINA AVG, Diademed bust of Severina right CONCORDIA MILITVM, Concordia standing with two standards, PXXT at ex. 3.19 gr Ref : RCV #11705 var, Cohen # 7 Severina, AE Denarius Rome mint, 5 th officina, AD 274-275. SEVERINA AVG, draped and diademed bust right. VENVS FELIX, Venus standing left, holding seated figure and sceptre. Є at exergue. 2.46 gr, 19-20 mm RIC V 1 # 6, RCV # 11710, C # 14 And a dual portrait of Aurelian and Severina Aurelian and Severina, Double sestertius Rome mint AD 274-275 IMP AVRELIANVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust of Aurelian right SEVERINA AVG, diademed and draped bust of Severina right, on crescent 11.18 gr Ref : Cohen # 1, RIC # 2, RCV # 11696 Whether this is a double sestertius or a dupondius is discussed and all scholars aren't on the same line about this. From the weight standards at this time, I like to think it's rather a double sestertius, but with no more evidence than that Q
