Got a batch of raw coins with a mind to clean them up and help find a focus. Some of you will know how 'well' that worked out for me and was thrilled to stumble across an online auction. Very pleased to say the I won some coins (and was gifted another). We went to Petra, Jordan a couple of years ago. If you ever have chance to go, please do. The place is incredible and we had a fantastic time - and got some of the iconic pictures of the Treasury. As this one on the nighttime experience. So a smart thought came to me when I saw the Petra treasury coin in the auction along with another Early Kings of Nabataea. That is a great place to start. Please excuse the photography (still working on that) but here are those coins. The first in the batch is Aretas IV, 9BC - 40 AD from Petra Mint, 6/5 BC and later. Followed by an Early Kings of Nabataea 135/4-1001 BC (no later than 32 BC). The third was the gifted coin that I am also really pleased with. A Falling Horseman type. I understand that I have so much reading to do yet, but looking forward to getting to grip with Doug Smith's Falling Horseman Pages.
Long story left long, I have decided that my next main Ancient focus will be collecting good grade examples of the four types of falling horsemen. I have a feeling this will provide great choices out from there.
I watched a documentary on Petra last week, I hadn't realised it was Nabataean. I particularly like your fallen horseman. As well as Doug's page, you should check out Dane's pages. http://www.catbikes.ch/helvetica/feltemps.htm
I second the idea of looking at Dane's pages and your making a set of four. To Dane, a set of FH coins is 2200 and I wish her well on the quest. Yours is a very nice example of its time and mint (Heraclea) - perhaps the best I've seen and certainly better than any I have. I particularly like the ribbed sleeve on the arm of the Roman.
tulipone => good luck in your hunt for Fallen Horsemen ... ... I only have the one example (cute lil' guy)
Winners there! I'm traveling right now, otherwise I would join the pile-on. @John Anthony specializes in Nabataean coins and has a website dedicated to them...I don't have the link handy.
that's a great night photo! i picked up a couple of these types this year... a nabatean with a nike reverse is still on my list!
I recently acquired another Nabataean. It's a common Aretas IV with Queen Shuqailat but it is extremely special to me: it's the first Nabataean coin collected by @John Anthony! I can't believe he parted with it in a trade. Thanks, John--it is now a treasured part of my collection . NABATAEA, Aretas IV with Queen Shuqailat 9 BCE - CE 40, Petra Obv: jugate busts of Aretas IV and Shuqailat right, Rev: crossed cornucopia; Nabataean Aramaic letters between and below Ref: Meshorer 112-114?

Just jokes, brother ... your weird Nabobatean thingy seems to have stuck, somehow (ugliest coins "ever"!!) Oh, but I do have a cool example "and" my sweet Zecret Zanta (Z-Bro) also gave me a rockin' example of these disastrous coins!! ... wanna see 'em? => they're actually pretty fricken cool, eh Uncle Jamie? I love ya, JA => thanks for all of your coinmanship during 2015 (I really do appreciate your extra efforts, my bun-loving friend) ... you're a good head
High-rating low-price ====> versus high-friendship and low-overhead No contest => all the best in 2016, Uncle Jamie (you rock, JA)
