1970 D Kennedy Half grade?

    I stand corrected by the group. I did instead buy a MINT set with the 70-D Kennedy, the regular US Mint release (ungraded) as others mentioned above since there were no proofs released at all. Where I got mixed up is that I have bought 14 of the later special silver Kennedy (ungraded) proofs, dating from dates between 1992 to 2008 (most of the years).

    I look for stuff like that but get discouraged because it's so hard to find a picture with any visible detail.

    As a retired spectroscopist, I recognize those two marks around the 9. They are burn marks from hitting the metal with a spark to determine the metals in the sample, presumably to determine its silver content. Too bad they didn't use an X-ray spectrometer which would not have harmed the surface.

    His coin is sealed in the mint packaging or 'cello'phane packaging the U.S. mint sealed the coins in way back when.
