To free from mint set, or not to free?

What do you do with mint sets?

  1. Cut them open and preserve accordingly.

  2. Leave them in original packaging.

  3. Only remove from mint set if the original plastic is damaged.

  4. Depends on the coins.

I bid on a couple 1970 mint sets so I could have a 70 D Kennedy and I won both of them, surprisingly. I'm trying to decide if I should cut them open and put the coins in 2X2's or leave them in the mint cello.

The coin needs to be MS-66 or better to be worth cutting up the set.

I'd probably cut out the nicer one, and leave the other in the mint wrapper.

Just make sure to check those 1970 S Lincoln cents for the Small Date and RPM...

I voted "Depends on the coins" because, well, technically I only buy mint sets if they have varieties in them. The only ones I don't do that for are ones that I pick up so ridiculously cheap that I re-sell them for greysheet bid.

So maybe just cut out the kennedy and varieties? That makes sense.

I see a lot of individual coins still in the cello.

The plastic on the kennedy has a couple pinholes in it so I'm gonna take it out.

Why just transfer them to a 2X2?

Well for this set if you cut out the half it losses most of its value. I wouldn't.

Cut them all out and spend any unattractive and valueless coins. Stabilize the others by soaking in a mixture of acetone and 91% isopropyl alcohol and then put into holders.

Most of these older mint sets are not stable and the coins need protection.
