I've recently been given a fair few pre-decimal coins ranging in dates and condition. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice of what to do next or if it's even worth starting to build on what I already have. I'm interested in starting a coin collection just don't know if this is a good place to start, with such a lack of knowledge. Any help/tips for a beginner I'll be thankful.
The American Numismatics association has a certification training which would help you choose your investments wisely
Buy a Spink (as you said pre-decimal, I am assuming British), disregard the prices, as they trend toward retail, rather than dealer prices. If it is pricey in the Spink, it is pricey in the real world. But only slightly less pricey. Collect what you enjoy. If you're trying to invest, coins are a bad thing to invest in.
Grading standards are similar for all coinage the issue is wear zones/ high points /low points/ fields and such ...
Agree with swish513 re Spinks would be a good starting point; As to advice on what to do next, it depends, do you like the coins you have and want to add(collect same but different years)? or more interested in adding other coins (types) possibly in the same/similar years to what you have? If you're not sure, that's where the book would come in handy as you could look at various series and see if there is something that interests you that you'd like to collect. ie - I personally like Farthings, but if you don't, then it wouldn't make sense to suggest you collect them. As to 'even worth...' hard to say without knowing what it is you're building on. Have fun!
I think it'll be nice if I could carry on the collection, filling in the year gaps and any missing coins then eventually go into more recent coins. At the moment I've got a whole mixture, one penny, half penny, new half penny, farthings, six pence. There are lots the same just different years. There's also a mystery coin in there I think the date is 1818, will take a photo if wanted. Not so much about worth, it's more of a hobby to do with grandad.
Nope, That is a 1797 cartwheel penny or twopence. What is the diameter? Looks to be in around G condition. I can't tell if the bust is worn due to wear or weak strike. Looks like both to me.
If it is the penny it is worth around $15 in it's condition, if it is the twopence it is worth slightly more.
