The value of a coin depends on supply and demand. While not many nifc halves are minted each year a huge proportion of the ones that are minted are saved by collectors in top grades. So the supply for each year relative to the number of collectors wanting one will always be high which means the price will stay low.

I have many times gotten whole boxes of bu nifc coins. I always throw them back. I would rather spend my time and storage space on silver. If I saved all the nifc coins I saw I would half a room full of them and nothing else.

Cash them in and find more silver or even wheaties!

Amen Brother! When I started reading here I saw many posts about NIFC finds, and since it didn't cost me anything I saved them. Like you I never though they were really worth much, but when the herd moves in one direction....
I also saved hundreds of dollars of proofs too and with few exceptions they are "impaired".

Looks like after I cash 'em all, I'll have a free ride on the next couple of boxes.

    Happy hunting!

I went to dump today. Someone had left a 1967 Kennedy Half. I was like sweet! Merry Christmas to me!

I agree and too have suffered the deluge of NIFCs. There are too many that are kept in pristine condition by collectors, that there just isn't much of a market for the circulation finds. The time and space could be utilized for better things.

I like to spend them as a way to demonstrate to cashiers that the Mint still makes the halfs, and that they are as ordinary as any other denomination. If more people use them as ordinary money, then maybe the Mint will start making ordinary circulation strikes again... maybe ;)

I dunno. I like to keep some harder to find coins. Maybe save 5 or 10 of the best of each nifc year and then offer the rest to us? I haven't filled my half dollar book yet...

Hit me up if you want to share some with me.

Last week I picked up 5 rolls each of quarters/dimes/nickels/cents, but used a different bank than I usually do. That was a good move! Just within that small number of rolls I found 2 silver nickels (42-P, 43-P) and two silver dimes (50, 54-D). These came from CWRs so I'm guessing the same customer dumped all the silver. It's definitely the best luck I've had in a long time, I can sometimes go years without finding any silver in hundreds and hundreds of rolls, and yesterday I find four silvers in ten rolls.

Picked up 4 CWR small Dollar coins today.

Found a bunch of NIFC Sacageweas! Filled 4 slots in my book and a few more in my Dad's collection.

    Filled 2004-P, 2005-P, 2005-D, and 2006-P!!!

Also found a Denver Wampenoag (sp?) Treaty coin I was missing and Dad filled a couple of Presidents in his book. Nice hunting. :)

Ruff day for silver. I hit every bank in town and not one single silver half. That was a first for me. I walked into about 20 banks and came out empty.

I did pic up 2 boxes of halves.

First box - skunked! I did however find 20 1998 P from 1 mint roll spread out through the box. Very weird....every single coin was in pretty much the same condition and had a die crack running across the bottom of the bust and ended at the rim to the west.

Haven't done second box yet. Details to come.

2nd box of the day gave up a 40%er.

My worst search ever. Probably handled $960 in half dollars today. Just 1 - 40%er.

It's been slow for me too, my last 6 or 7 boxes of half dollars have yielded nothing. My loosing streak is over though, half way through current box and found 3 '64s and a '69-D along with a couple of interesting error finds so far...

Screwed up my post, maybe I got it right this time!
Looks like you found a sister box to some of my old boxes! About 6 months ago I kept finding dozens and dozens of those cracked '98-Ps. See how this crack grows:
    98c1.jpg 98c2.jpg 98c3.jpg 98c4.jpg 98c5.jpg 98c6.jpg
I have more examples and they are not all the same crack.

I also found similar cracked '97-P & '96-P half dollars.

Here's a '97-P that has a die crack running all the way across the coin:
    1997-Pcrack1.jpg 1997-Pcrack2.jpg
The crack continues NW from the bust through the chin, corner of mouth, eye, forehead and the E in "LIBERTY".
Same coin, another crack starting W from the nose:

You're reminding me of a coin Dad found a couple of weeks ago. Wish I had taken a photo to show to you (he showed it to me on Christmas eve). 1972-D half, with a double die reverse! It's really promanant too. Not in the 2016 Red book.

He was comparing halfs to update his book when he found it. I had only known about the 1974-D obverse DD. Very nice find!

    $15.50 loose halves - 8x 40%ers and a 1949 Benji

    $1000 2 boxes of halves - 3x 40%ers

    Also found a few impaired proofs (72, 81, 98, 04)

Not a bad haul today :D

    $17 in halves...one 64 & one 68

$41 of Ikes..'72 peg leg & '72 greased no E on ONE on reverse.

3 boxes of dimes in the last 2 months,15 silver rosies , but not what I was looking for. I almost never do dimes but there is a very nice 2015 P die clash out there and that was what I was searching for. Found 2 & it will keep me buying dimes for a few more months.
