As most of you know I'm new to "The Dark Side" or ancient coins. I posted my first coin several months ago and since then I have purchased a few more. This is my 10th ancient coin purchase. Other than being a "Jerusalem Lily" I know very little about it. I did pay a bit more as I purchased it from the Israel Mint but it has a Certificate and a nice display box (photo not mine) so I'm please with the purchase. I have also purchased several others since this one but I'm still waiting for delivery. You know, a guy could get hook on this sort of thing if they weren't careful. I haven't switched but I do like a lot of the material that is available.
Hard to see the coin from the picture...the obverse looks like it could be very nice. I also think a meme should be posted here but my tablet and memegenerator won't cooperate.
Nice coin CN. The box is nice for carrying it if you want to do show & tell. Guide to Biblical Coins by David Hendin is one of the better Biblical / Jewish coin books. Your coin is a Hendin (5th edition) 1131. If you are converting to the dark side, you may want a guide book. According to Hendid, the coin was issued in 131 - 130 BC by John Hyrcanus I (he used the Lilly as his symbol on this and other coins) in the name of the Seleucid king Antiochus VII (symbolized by the Seleucid anchor). It is the first series of Hasmonean Dynasty coins. Antiochus VII died in battle in 130 BC.
Awesome coin, CN! Collecting ancients is likened to the Lays chips slogans, "you can't have just one." Welcome! Erin
I need me a Widow's Mite. It's nothing to do with the religious baggage most people attach to them in an attempt to overprice them and sell them to the clueless non-numismatist mases, I just think the 8 spoke wheel and anchor look cool.
