Jango => that's great that you're trying to keep your lil' bro into coin-collecting (yah, sometimes collectors drift and find other life-hobbies ... hopefully he'll keep the flame burning and will return back at some point)

... other than Q's not too secret Santa gift, I didn't give any coins as gifts this Christmas (however, I do have a two year old Godson who I may try to groom/lure to the dark-side ... luckily, most of my coins are "animal" coins, so I can play the age-old game of "what animal is this?")

Oh, and do you want a cookie?

... gawd, but he's probably gonna have to meet Doug's grandson in the championship game!!

 

My brother collects toys and specifically Ninja Turtles. I found a Ninja Turtle token from the '80s that had the blimp on one side and the logo on the other. I sent that to him as well as a Morgan dollar.

 

I gave out a 1909-2009 Lincoln Dansco to my 6 year old second cousin with a roll of 30s, 40s, & 50s wheaties plus 3 random early dates. 1910, 1914, & 1918 Philadelphias.

At first I thought he was a little young and wouldn't get it. Then he started figuring out that there were numbers on each coin and they belonged in the corresponding hole (ignoring the mint mark) in the album.

After about 5 minutes and placing coins into the correctly dated holes, he started to realize that the ports had a little letter too and that's when he realized to look for the mint mark on the coin! He then made me take out all the ones that were in the right date but wrong mint hole and I was so proud of him. It also managed to engage the whole family. His grandparents (my aunt and uncle) were telling him he could go through their pennies and look for what he needs. I could also see it sparking an interest in my uncle who collected coins as a little boy with my grandfather. My grandfather has always been a coin collector, took my dad and uncle to shows when they were younger, and is what lead to me being a collector today as well. Both my grandfather and father sort of showed me the way and I realized that my little second cousin wasn't going to get that experience or family curse without a little nudging, so I stepped up and am so filled with joy that even at such a young age he started to show a little spark of interest.

Plus from here on I have something I can give to him for birthdays and special occasions by helping him fill his book, especially the early dates that he won't have access to. Ahh I think I'm more excited than he was now that I think about it.

To top all of that off, it may have re-engaged my uncle and may even start my older cousin in collecting since he sort of needs to help his son a little bit.
