Log Potato mentioned about his first world coin.

Im curious since a lot of collectors started as kids what was the first piece that started your collection or made you collect coins. World or US.

Now I mainly collect world coins and love over dates counter stamps and errors the most.

I don't collect many US coins anymore and have few left from when I started but this was the piece that started my interest in coins.

It was 2001, I had bought a coke for 50C and received this in change. I remember it was the coolest thing I had seen I thought I had won the lottery. Never had seen a error coin before. I spent many weeks researching it. Oddly enough I didn't get it graded until last April.

This question has been asked over and over again just this year. The search function is your friend!

ok and many complain bring up old threads. there are many new members here as well. I dont see a problem with asking the question. I think the time you wasted to put a negative response you could have easily passed by the thread and saw something you could have positively replied on.

I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a "struck-thru grease" error. Very interesting.

A very long time ago (at least it seems like a long time ago), a friendly local dealer somehow interested me in Liberty nickels. Holding something historic in my hand hooked me early on. Then I took a long break and came back after buying some Mexican coins. Then I took another long break and came back after buying some bullion. This leached into numismatic items once again and most recently Japanese coins have grabbed my psyche and won't let go. Who knows what the next phase will bring?

This is the world coin that grabbed me, this was probably 20 years ago. I was at a gun show that had a few coin dealers also. I was enthused about U S silver coins but had never bought anything of much value, funds were tight. I was scanning the coins at one dealer's table, he looked like a character and he had a bunch of old green 2x2 coin trays filled with a totally disorganized array of coins. I saw this 5 Francs and it stood out as something different. The dealer gruffly quoted $43 dollars and kind of walked away. I tried to negotiate but he wouldn't budge. I didn't know what it was worth anyway. So I paid too much but I don't care, I've had years of fun chasing older world crowns. I have better coins but I have no plans of parting with this one. Happy Collecting!

People aren't complaining about old threads being resurrected. They're just trying to point out that you may not get much response to questions or comments. Besides, the old threads being referenced are usually many years old, not a few weeks or months. Why don't you let me worry about how much of my own time I've wasted. If you don't like negative responses, then maybe you should rethink what you post.

Chris enjoys being critical...it's supposed to be fun...and he has a tendency to make it a bit of a chore.

What started me collecting, I was at the aiport in San Diego, coming home for leave, beginning of 2004. There was a person wanting to sell an old 1,000 yen note from japan. I bought it and started collecting world paper money. Just started collecting coins around 2009, still buy paper now and then. i have around 2,000 notes.

    Alrighty then.

Mine was a Mercury dime that my grandmother put in the cabbage for New Years about thirt five years ago. It was to symbolize good luck with money over the coming year for whomever found it. Today my Mercury set is all MS, but that beautiful cleaned XF 1941 still sits proudly I'm my Dansco and it will remain there forever. A MS 1941 is quite cheap and common, but that memory is priceless.

Chris, it seems like even positive posts get a disproportionate negative feed back from you. Here's a big kiss to make your day!

I'm entitled to my opinion just like everyone else. I used to respond to threads like this just like the others, but after 50 of them over a 5-year period, it's slightly overdone. The most recent thread was November 25. Why didn't the OP post his photo there? By the way, fish, why haven't you posted a photo? Is it already on another thread?

There was no need for that post. That's the worst thing that has been said in this thread. You should edit it.

That's okay, Larry. When someone doesn't have an intelligent response, it's not unusual for them to make nasty comments.
