Humm... I've been eating heart shaped strawberries; military grapeshot shaped blackberries; round cherries/blueberries all my life. I'll wager that the "football shaped thing" on a trade dollar was actually intended to be some sort of Pod! I've noticed that the "berries" on Seated Liberty coins are closed and then were opened when the design changed. Markus, your post made me think of that after I started a humorous (?) retort! I think we are on to something never before brought up or considered in numismatics! This needs research into the literature...
The first thing to look at on these is the dentils and rims. On this coin they are not uniform and poorly executed, a common sign of fakes. This is important because they don't always get it wrong in the manner @SuperDave pointed out.
This one's a pretty good fake aside the incorrect reverse; the denticle area is about the only real pickup to the casual observer. I bet this one's passed as real.
