well, i may have some more coins coming in (negotiating with seller), but they wont show up at my house until after the new year...and i don't count my chickens before they hatch. so here are my last coins of the year, have had for a bit now but was saving up for a single post. first, probably not the type that first pops in your head when you hear "syracuse" on the ancients..but i have three byzantine coin minted there now. this was a coin show pick up in november. Byzantine Empire. Constantine V with Leo IV. Æ Follis. 751-775 AD O: Constantine V and Leo VI. R: Leo III. 20x16 mm, 2.0g, Syracuse mint. SB 1569 this coin features three generations, grandpa on the reverse, and father and son on the obverse. fun fact for those of you new to byzantine coins. constantine v is known as constantine "copronymus", which means "poop named"! LOL! i guess when he was being christened as baby, he pooed his britches...which is what baby's do right? so he know to the ages a "my name is poop"! ok, a recent thread you had on coins of syracuse left me out of the loop, so i had to get a couple of greeks. first, a coin that has been on my list for over a year. this was an ebay win. Hieron II, Syracuse, 275-215 BC O: Poseidon, R: Trident between dolphins, ΙΕΡΩ−ΝΟΣ below, 20 mm, 6.6g, Calciati-197 this one was picked up at the same coin show as the byzantine. kind of took a gamble on this one, wasn't really familiar with the type or the price range, and couldn't look stuff up online, but i came out ok. SICILY. Syracuse. Hiketas II. 287-278 BC. O: Zeus Hellanios, R:Eagle (on thunderbolt, off flan), SNG ANS-797(?), 21 mm, 9.4 g two question for anyone that knows... 1. any idea on the attribution? the one above show a right facing bust, mine is left...but it's the only thing i could find and jives with the sellers attribution. am i correct? 2. is zeus hallanios different that...well, just zeus? so, "zeus of the greeks"? post anything you want form syracuse!

Congrats on your Sicilian finisher, Chris, all three are winners. I wish I had one with Constantine the Pooper, but the only Byzantine Sicilian I have is a different Leo vs. Constantine mashup. Your Hiketas seems a lot like mine except mine is messy from being struch over a coin of the Democracy. On the reverse, the Sigma is from the undertype but the A is from Hiketas. Of the books in my library, I could only attribute mine to Favorito, Bronze Coinage of Ancient Syracuse, type 50 but he show so many variations that my overstrike makes uncertain as to which.
