When I bought my last Otacilia Severa/Pietas, I also picked up this Volusian from the same seller. It was $24 shipped and with the condition and a not too common reverse, decided to add it. Plus I didn't have a Rome Mint version, just Antioch. And the Alfonso XI is from JA. I have wanted one of these for awhile. Volusian (251 - 253 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: IMP CAE C VIB VOLVSIANO AVG radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: CONCORDIA AVGG, Concordia seated left, holding patera and double cornucopiae, star in right field. Rome Mint 3.35g 22mm RIC IV, 169; RSC 25; Hunter 6; Sear 9743. Alfonso XI, (1312 - 1350 A.D.) Spain, Leon Billon Cornado O: +ALFON S REX, crowned bust left R: CASTELE LEGION•, castle with three towers; L and star flanking tower, L below. León mint. 19mm .81g ME 1182; Burgos 289.
two cool coins to wrap up 2015! volusian is on my "list", i'd love to get that one for 24 bucks..nice example. the spanish coin is great as well, has a pretty unique style...and a pretty good bust considering most of the medieval art.
Yup, nice way to close the year, Mat. I think I'm done with my 2015 purchases as well, but it'll be 2016 before some of my most recent pickups reach me.
Very nice strike on the Volusian! I'm glad you liked the Alfonso - those coins do indeed have a unique style, but these aren't your last coins for the year. You've got another care package on the way.
Both are terrific coins and that Alfonso is VERY interesting and unknown to me. I love the centering and condition..... I'm ending my year with a 'batch' of nice 'budget' types which I'll post by about the 22nd or so...then it's on to my New Years focus in January of 1-3 coins that I absolutely MUST have---a replacement for my Tyrian Shekal at the top of the list. Congrats again. Mat!!!!
I don't have an 'Alfonso', so I'll post an old photo of a Ant of Volusian that I have-----almost as nice as yours....
