Hi all, sorry if this question makes no sense, but i was wondering, if there is a big concern with storage of coins due to humidity and air toxins, would it be safe to use a vacuum food storage system on my coins, similar to the food storage ones that pull out all the air and seals the coin inside plastic. No air = no humidity and no air toxins
THe plactic those bags are made of contains PVC most likely. So then that would be the worst possible thing to do. Creative Idea though.
newuser: First, welcome to the forum. second: hamman is correct. the bags most likely are composed of PVC (polyvinylchloride) which is the chemical that keeps the bags soft. As a result, those coins may come out covered in PVC which leaves a sticky residue on them, and is a pain to remove, especially without damaging the coins. Better the air toxins than PVC.
(faints in horror) No really, the toxins in the air not all that bad just store them someplace cool 70-78 deg and dry no more than 50% hum and add a couple silica humidity absorbers. Works wonders
Howdy newuser - Welcome to the Forum !! What the others are saying about using PVC products to store coins in is correct - it's a very bad idea. However, any product that is manufactured with the intention of being used for food storage cannot contain any, 0%, PVC. So using a food storage product for coin storage would be quite safe. I can't say that I would really recommend it though as you don't really want to store more than 1 coin in a bag and the bags would be way too big for just 1 coin. It would be a very cumbersome system.
Some others have experimented with this & had it effect the coin's surface. I'll see if I can find the post & see if it says exactly what they did/used. EDIT: FWIW here's the info I was thinking of... http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14446
I have been storing proof ASE capsules in the Ziploc freezer bags (10 per bag) and storing the Ziploc bags in plastic boxes. I got that suggestion here at this forum about 6-months back.
I buy all my eagles encapsulated already. If they are proof, done. If they are unc from the dealer network, i make sure they are in a case otherwise i dont buy. I cant believe alot of sellers sell them 'as-is'. Hey, if thst whatthey want to do, i pass
Store them in a cool dry place...and best in holders like these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280115521917 or a slab or something similar.
Toning I had an out-of-body experience yesterday. As I go through my change, I keep really good specimans. For example, if I find a Full Step nickel, I've been putting it in a plastic coin tube. When I first started this a couple of months ago, I had quickly torn off about a quarter of a page of that yellow legal pad paper and bunched it up to act as a stopper inside the tube so the coins wouldn't slide around. Well, yesterday, I take them out to kind of look 'em over. They ALL have a yellowish haze on them. Most of them were those shiny new 2005-2007 nickels that looked like mirrors. Now poor old Jefferson looks like he just had the 89 cent special at Taco Johns. And mind you, this was only after a couple of months. Luckily I learned my lesson "at face value" and not with some super-cool coins I might have won from an estate auction on E-Bay
