    Hi everyone,

I hope you're all happily getting ready for Friday!

I got some unexpected money from some generous people in my church and thought I'd put it toward a coin.

I've been looking at the crocodile coin with Augustus and Agrippa on it ever since I saw it in a thread from another member.

I've found one that I can now afford and was wondering if I could get some opinions before I hit the big red buy button.

    Thanks so much!

Nice coin, what is the price tag?

Everyone loves this coin, Everyone has this coin, I like it but don't have one. If the coin speaks to you and the price is palatable than buy it, The best advice given to me is, if I have to ask for someones opinion on a coin, than I should wait for a coin in which that opinion no longer matters. For a the newbie, this is a great coin and its authentic and desirable. I mean seriously who does not want a Croc tied to a palm tree.

What Noob said. Nice that the croc has a full head. Check with the seller that the surface is stable.

I dont own one either, and actually dont care for it much. And before I get bombed I think it's mainly because its a type that has been shown here alot for it falls into the fallen horseman/Gordian III type of range for me.

I wouldnt say I would never own one, if the price was a stupid bargain, but I dont have it on "the list".

The OP coin looks OK, for sure it would depend on the cost. Many of these are higher then they should be.

    Thanks for your opinions, everyone.

This coin is about $150 CAD. It'll be covered from the money I got.

I'm hoping I'll get to that point soon, Ancientnoob. I'm still somewhat of a noob and appreciate the opinions of those who are more experienced than I am.

    Thanks again!

It's a damn good example for $150. If you don't buy it, let me know so I can.

Hm. Actually, on second thought some of the pitting on the obverse looks like it may have an issue with BD.

I wish I had got mine for the price of an FH :D
Each to their own. Personally I wouldn't bend down to pick up a Chinese washer. It is whatever floats your boat. If it sings to you, it is not a fake, it is affordable, go for it. :D

That is why I said to ask the seller if it was stable.

i think it's a pretty nice lookin' coin, and i'm no expert, but that price seems reasonable.

That's what I was afraid of, John.

I took Pishpash's advice and sent a message to the seller asking about the stability of the surface. Thanks for that tidbit!

that's a question worth askin, i don't think it's BD..but it could be. if it is...then that bumps that coin to DO NOT BUY.

    A similar coin on Vcoins
    https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ma...us_gaul_chained_crocodile/633441/Default.aspx

The others are either not in good condition, or the prices are ridiculous. Always ask a Vcoins seller what his best price is, or make him an offer.

Always have a bottle of Verdi-Care in your possession. It is one thing to pick up a cheap coin on ebay that has BD, but if you are spending serious money, you need to be careful. If the coin does have BD, you cannot tell from a picture whether it has entered the coin or is just on the surface. Surface BD can be tackled, but if it is in the coin, you are likely to see your money rot before you

Thanks Pishpash. I like that coin too!

It's a toss between those two now.

I'm terrified of bd. I'll have to get some Verdi care to keep on hand.

If you get some Verdi-Care, get a couple of cheap coins from ebay to test it on, that way, when you need to use it in anger, you will know what you are doing. I don't consider any coin that has had BD "cured" it is only in remission.

I had considered this exact coin when I was looking for an Augustus / Agrippa crocodile, and the price offered was the best I could find for this quality. I ended up getting one slightly better for an extra $50.

=> curious? ... are you Canadian?

Oh, I'm not a huge fan of that coin (sure, it has a croc-face, so it might be a bit better than my example, but since I bought my face-less croc coin, I've realized that there are quite a few of these cool examples, so if I were you => I'd wait just a bit longer and I betcha a slightly better example will come slinking-by!!)

    cheers

Oh, and here is my example (I love it ... but I sure wish that I'd waited a bit longer and scooped a coin with "all of the cool bits")

There's nothing wrong with that coin, Steve. I love it. You just need another one, that's all. :)

I am from the great land up north, eh! :)

That is a fine example, Steve!

The $150 range is probably the best I can do for a good while.

I'm a bit unwise sometimes and often jump at the first thing that I can afford.

I might just hold off for a bit to see if a better deal comes along.

Thanks for all the advice! It's very much appreciated. :)
