I've somewhat recently been getting into coronation tokens and desk medals. I've noticed that the Montenuovo number seems to be the most common identification number given for these, but I haven't been able to find any information on where this Montenuovo ID number comes from. I'm assuming there's some catalog that lists world medals and tokens with these numbers? If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be appreciated.

It's a nearly 100 year old publication titled "Die Siebenburgischen Munzen Des Furstlich Montenuovo'schen Munzcabinets, Beschrieben Von A. Hess by Von Montenuovo". You can find a reprint easily and cheaply. An English translated version may not be easy to get though.
