I've learned a bunch about Ancient Coins in 2015. I now belong to 2 Ancient coin clubs (Cincinnati and San Francisco) and my last trip to SFO gave me the opportunity to hang with real smart ancient coin guys from CNG (Kerry and Bill). These 3 coins are from the last e-auction CNG 365. CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 315-302 BC. AR Nomos (21mm, 7.71 g, 10h). Warrior, holding shield and two spears, preparing to cast a third, on horseback right; ΣA below Phalanthos, holding kantharos and trident, on dolphin left; retrograde K to left; below, dolphin left. Fischer-Bossert Group 72, 861 (V340/R668); Vlasto 609 (same dies); HN Italy 937; SNG Copenhagen 850 (same dies). VF, toned, some die wear. I've been stalking this next coin for about a year. I love this guy! And the reverse is way out there in the freaky zone! CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS, Pantikapaion. Circa 310-304/3 BC. Æ (21mm, 7.02 g, 11h). Bearded head of satyr right / Forepart of griffin left; below, fish left. MacDonald 69; Anokhin 1023; HGC 7, 113. And my personal favorite of this year.... SATRAPS of CARIA. Hekatomnos. Circa 392/1-377/6 BC. AR Tetrobol (15mm, 3.90 g). Mylasa mint. Head and leg of roaring lion, the leg to right, head turned left Stellate pattern in circular incuse. Konuk, Identities 11; SNG Keckman 274; SNG Ashmolean 356; SNG Copenhagen 588–9. That's it! Thanks for being smart and sharing it!
Exceptional coins! Don't let Bill and Kerry talk you into collecting Chinese spade money and Roman tesserae. That stuff is crap.
About 3 weeks ago one of the CVG coin guys gave me a bunch of old "Celator" issues and next thing you know I'm having dinner with the former editor! Crazy small ancient world!
AND Kerry of course knows Dave, the CVG coin club guy who gave me the old Celators and all the other guys in the CVG club!
These are great coins I like all of them, but if I had to choose I would take number 3. What you want to do is collect Nabatean coins and never looks at anything made with the word Hun attached to it.
all three are fantastic, the tarentum coin is awesome of course...but the details on that bosporos coin are steller (griffon and a cool needle fish), and a well centered lion head on the third.
Wow JBG => all three of those OP coins are winners!! (the PAN coin is very sharp ... cool fish in exergue)
