Been offered a set of coins in what looks lmore like a toolbox than a coin case! has around 15 x 1 rouble coins, all different. Proofs but all toned and most light contact marks (examples below) I like the idea of collecting them but have no idea on value! Can anyone tell me anything about these USSR Coins and also if they have much value. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wproD11v2sc/Vnh_ZF1jM2I/AAAAAAAAAK4/pi0E2D6xdqo/s1600/SAM_0146.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b8Z2SLPVYn4/Vnh_fJKP0SI/AAAAAAAAALA/4SfoZp1bp28/s1600/SAM_0147.jpg
Shame on the finger print. It comes down to what is in the set. If I suspect what they are, some are restrikes but still worth a bit of money. It can be anywhere from 5 to 10 dollars each. On the other hand if the early Soviet ruble coins are not restrikes, they are worth significantly more in proof condition.
Looks like there was once a heavy patina that got harshly removed. Lable does not look like anything official, so no premium there. You can find anything you need about those coins online, they`re extremely common. And no, not much value at all.
I disagree with the extremely common notion. Early Soviet proof coins have been quite unappreciated for a long time and original proof coins are quite valuable. Take for instance the 1970 Lenin commemorative ruble in proof condition. While there has been many unofficial packaging - if I am not wrong, these sets were packaged by Mezhnumizmatika in the late 1980s to early 1990s. These have been slowly disappearing from the market as a lot of uninformed collectors have been throwing them out. If each coin is worth at least 5 dollars - that's still a bit of money there.
When I said extremely common I meant their description and information about them is available online, even in English. Non restrike proofs are not common and rather expensive, I agree. Recently most early commem. 1 rub. proofs are kind of pricey on eBay. But the 2 TS showing on the photos are not, in that condition. BTW, certain sets from Mezhnumizmatika and some other "known" 3rd party manufacturers sets are showing in what seems like surges on eBay. For some time many Barcelona 1992 sets of 6 coins showed in that blue square boxes, then disappeared. Now the German "Pfeiffer Numismatik Artikel" Olympic sets are showing along with red box set of 6 non-silver Olympic 1 rub. coins. Kind of weird how they appear and disappear from time to time.
