    Well.

You know those sellers at a flea market who you never shop...because they have everything so outrageously priced? Common IHC for $7. Bank roll quality Jefferson Nickels for $5. Random foreign silver for $50-100. Everything in a 2x2 marked as a KEY DATE.

Well, today, I decided to just look at what he had, and I noticed this UGLY coin in a tiny box of mixed US coins. I could barely read the date...until I got the lighting angle just right...and once I saw, I asked how much the coins were in that box.

"$3 each, except the IHC, which I'll put in with the $7 coins, and the Mercury Dimes, which are $10"

($10 circulated 1940's Mercury Dimes? On what planet?)

So I bought it immediately. Why, you may ask, did I pay $3 for the ugliest Liberty Nickel I've ever seen?

No, you gotta tilt it JUST right...

    1886 Liberty Nickel - Date.jpg

    Yep, that's an 1886 (key.)

So, my question to you is:

Do you think it would grade PO1? And, if so, what do you think that would be worth to a lowball registry collector?

I'll hang up and take your answers off the air.

Details. hole filler for an album though.

It'll make the grade easily if the surfaces pass. That doesn't look very likely, but the TPG might feel differently. This is key, for a Registry coin.

Heck, I didn't know these were an active Lowball subject until this thread - the top 5 sets are all serious efforts. But only 5, which kind of narrows the Registry-specific market considering there are already 7 in P01. :)

I also checked out the PCGS Registry to see (like you) if there even were Liberty Nickel Low Ball sets. The top 2 have 1886 in P01...but the next 3 have only FA2! That's 3 prospective buyers lol...

It is dark...but not quite so grainy in hand. My camera's sensor is doing strange things today. Might be worth the fun of sending to PCGS as a piggyback "gamble $20, maybe you win, maybe not" kind of submission.

I'd go for it. But I'm not exactly the heppest cat around...anyway, I think it's worth a try, esp. if those surfaces are not grainy.

If you do send it in, please post the results.

you clearly have a PO-1 shot.

    perhaps even lower!

    :)

    Is there a PO-.05?

I agree. I looked at previous PO1 from those registry sets...and this one is much more worn. Makes me wonder if it's STAR worthy (almost to the next grade down) lol... Exceptional.......ly bad eye appeal...

My gut says that it has too much detail in the center to be a PO-01, particularly on the reverse. I'm thinking FR-02. Check out the PCGS Photograde (Click) - The PO-01 is nearly flat with just a hint of Liberty on the obverse and a faint "V" on the reverse. I think your obverse is PO-01, but the reverse is FR-02.

In summation, I suppose it depends on the grader and on the day...

Definitely not AG-03 though. Way too worn for that.

My question is why do the top pictures show a coin without a clip, yet the bottom closeup seems to show a clip right before the date. What am I missing?
