Here is a China 1932 1 Dollar (NGC MS63) that I had about two years ago. (Bought by a doctor in Hong Kong.)

Magnificent set of Portuguese sailing coins. I've never seen them before. Does the set have a name and what metal are them minted with?

They're copper nickel and there were four a year from the late 80s through the late 90s. I'm not sure what the official series name is but they're all about Portuguese exploration. I do have the complete set but I'm not sure if I have them all scanned. I need to see if I have others that I don't have pictures of. I like Portuguese coins and exploration so it was a set I had to have. Most of them I got from a seller in Portugal.

Very cool list and well designed. Anyone familiar with the early days of European discovery should know that the Portuguese were the ones who found the Cape of Good Hope and the route to India, setting the role model for much of Europe. Shame they aren't silver, though.

They would be lovely in silver, but I wouldn't have been able to afford them, so I have mixed feelings on that.

I think I may have to add Portuguese coins to my future list of acquisitions.... In spite of getting seasick on ANY boat.
But I think coins are, in part about history (past and present), so these coins are a tribute to the Portuguese sailors who dared to 'fall of the end of the world'.

I was just looking in Krause and there is a silver version of all of them so if that's your fancy and you have the budget they are available. But yes, the Portuguese really had an impressive history of exploration. Really their small population kept them from being a great world power because they just didn't have the manpower to take advantage of their discoveries. They hired on a lot of sailors from other nations and they learned, went back to their home countries and became competitors.

That's good to know. Maybe just collect a few of both, bronze and/or silver. Question: does the series of coins have a name? Of course, I'm not OCD in that I have to have the complete series. I like to dabble in whatever catches my eye. I just bought (2) of the new Silver Britannia 50 pound coins (new for late 2015), because the design of the [lady] Britannia just caught my eye.

It probably does have a name but I wasn't able to find it. I do like to have complete series myself.

    Hiddendragon:
WRT the Portuguese coin set celebrating sailing ships, I guess I'll have to do some on-line research. but with the great pictures you sent, that should simplify pinning it down

The following has a full catalog of Portuguese coins by year, demonination, and pictures. Seems like a good place to idea individual Portugal coins depicting sailing ships: http://colnect.com/en/coins/list/country/2279-Portugal/name/escudos/sort/by_catalog_code/page/8

Among my favorites is from the Austrian mint. "Austria on the high seas" series of six coins from 2004 - 2006.
For a landlocked country, Austria certainly had a great naval history.
