How do I list this puppy in my inventory? I bougth this about 2 years ago - someone polished the heck out of it, but I love the details. When you put the eagle shield under a loop - it is like every ray in the shield(and shield lines) are clear as day. But with 0 mint lustre I have listed it as XF details polished. So what is your opinion? I don't call it a beast, and no telling what this would have been worth if someone had just left it alone. I got it for $50(well plus tax). I was looking at shield nickels when I kept noticing this coin reflecting light into my eye from the next case. That is how harshly it was polished - but I loved the details. Oh well! One of them rash purchases, but I like it.
okay - 1 vote VF harshly cleaned. I wonder what someone like ANACs would put on the holder? Harshly cleaned and polished - or what?
It can be difficult to see the wear areas as clearly with a polished up coin, but I would say that the coin has AU-50 details. Of course, the cleaning nets it lower....maybe VF.
Here's my guess, The high points and open surface areas are very bright. The surface areas around the high points are dull The coin is worn and has many small surface scratches so you would expect a dull finish on the entire coin with signs of toning and/or normal wear conditions for a piece of silver this old. I have attached part of the picture to show what I mean by dull areas. Would love to have those in the know to help me understand if I'm correct and if there are other signs. Thanks Darryl
