    Colectus Coinus,I wonder what sort of coins were aboard the wreck - Mexican Pieces of 8 or Mexican 8 Escudos.

    Hmmm..I don't know Mexican coin history, but they appear not to be "hammered" coins which I find ugly and uninteresting.

    I guess there would be the "Columnarios." In the picture from that news site they are looking at large silver coins so I'm guessing there are definitely 8-real pieces. I think the smaller denomination coins /reales wouldn't be shipped to England since those are more for daily commerce.

    It will certainly be very interesting to see all the various coins that might be there. The imagination sure can wander. I would think, however, that with the ship being form a specific port, that the majority of the coins might be from the last port-of-call.... just a thought.
