Going through one of my unc. Jefferson Nickel collections that I have in a Dansco that are toning nicely. I ran across this 1942 S. It has a die crack that runs top to bottom almost 12 K to 6 K. Have a look at the progression of the crack close up.
Very nice Paddy! But I have to ask, how long have you had this before you noticed the die crack? Love the toning that's developing.
I most probably noticed it years ago when this set was put together. But haven't touched this album since 2007 so probably forgot I had this coin. At one time I had a roll of each date and mint mark War nickels . Including a roll that had a 43/2 & a double eye.
That's a shame. You'd probably have more free time to enjoy your nice collection if you stayed off of the beach with your metal detector. Nah, that wouldn't work, you find too many good things and have fun doing it!
I've also been going through old folders and albums I put together years ago and mostly from circulation. Now I'm eliminating my duplication but have found several nice nickel lamination errors as well as several full blown Lincoln wheat lamination errors. I also have to find some time to go through an extra set of mercury dimes and short set of WL halves to check for varieties. Nice find Paddy.
Paddy, Thanx for the great view of this variety of cracked piece, never would have seen it w/out your help...
I'm glad you enjoyed seeing this....however what I think that even cooler is the post by Lehigh , uncommon cents, and all the posters who shared different die states,as well as different dies that this sort of die crack occurred. Studying all the images you can see that all similar none are spot on of the others. Kanga statement of the 12 to 6 being the preferred path of the break. There are several series that the same,or similar type cracks occur . So I agree with Kanga statement totally . If you study Lehigh 's specimen you'll notice a crack on Tom's head . This is another die crack very common on War time Jefferson nickels . I'll dig one out tomorrow and image and post I believe that one is a 43.
Well, now you've got my attention. I have 3 sets of War Nics. Gotta get my loupe out and start checking all the coins. And it looks like all of the regular Jeffs too.
Kanga go to varietyvista.com down load the "FREE" book on Jefferson variety nickels on war time nickels. I carry it on my phone. When at coin shows if I spot a specimen that interests me I use it to check it for a variety . Most every date and mint mark has some sort of variety . Some are rarer, some common .
