You will be pleased to know that Cyprus & Malta will be changing over from their Pound currencies to the Euro in 2008 after being given the green light by the European Commission & the European Central Bank. The fixed rates between the Cypriot & Maltese Pounds & the Euro will be set at a meeting later on this year. I am sure that those who are collecting Euro coins will want the ones from these 2 British Commonwealth member states.I will definitely be getting these to go with my collection of Irish Euro coins. Aidan.
OH NO!!!!!!! how am i going to get som eof their current currencies now? I just cant wait until after they switch because it will cost more then face!!!! oh-well ... another one down the drain!!
Some of the Maltese coins are easy to find,& some of them are difficult to find.Cypriot banknotes & coins are easier to find. As to the Maltese banknotes, that's a different story. They are very difficult to find.Eventually,I will get some more banknotes denominated in both Cypriot & Maltese Pounds into my collection. Aidan.
Well, the Council has not officially decided yet, but since both the ECB and the Commission said that the two countries may join, the Council will most likely approve. Slovakia may follow in Jan-2009; at least that is what the Slovakian government aims at. Guess the euro collectors do not actually care whether a new euro country is a member of the "British" Commonwealth or not, but of course they will be after the pieces from CY and MT later this year and early next year. And the two are smaller than, say, Spain or Germany, but the coins will not be that hard to get, I think. Now starter kits and packed sets may be a different story. Cyprus and Malta (and also Slovakia) will first issue coins only. The notes, which have the same look in all of Euroland anyway, will be "borrowed" from other Eurosystem central banks. Christian
Update - in June both the European Parliament and the EU Council approved the changeover plans of Cyprus and Malta. Both countries will introduce the euro on 1 January 2008. And yesterday the Ecofin Council decided about the conversion rates. Here they are ... Cyprus: 1 € = 0.585274 £ Malta: 1 € = 0.429300 Lm Not terribly surprising. These final rates are the same as the central ERM-II rates of the two currencies. Christian
I guess many millions more coins will be hitting the melting pot. It's always kid of bitter sweet since I've saved uncirculated examples of the old coins and they'll become more valuable when people discover some are pretty hatd to find. But, many millions more coins will be hitting the melting pot.
