I just posted a web page with a short discussion of coin I got recently from a fellow forum member (@red_spork). http://esty.ancients.info/imit/RRimitation.html It is a plated imitation in Dacian style mixing the obverse of one Republican issue with the reverse of another. Go to the page to learn more about the types. I like to put information on web pages. Unfortunately, many interesting forum postings tend to disappear into the past, whereas web pages remain easy to find and accessible from a Table of Contents page. The page is part of my larger educational site: http://esty.ancients.info/
Thank you for a succinct and informative page. Now I'm off reading Phil's site, which I was previously unaware of, and will likely while away the rest of the day doing that!
Wow, I'm actually familiar with both RR denarii used for this imitative piece. I wonder why the Dacians chose to use two different coins like that. They are not completely bad imitations in comparison to some of the invitation pieces I've seen here. The designs actually somewhat resemble the ones on the original coins.
I am a huge fan of imitations. I will hope to soon acquire an imitation of a RR denarius. There are some fabulous imitations from Dacia, Gaul and Iberia. I hope to acquire at least one of each. Great info provided in this thread.
