I thought about putting together a set of Sac's, until I came across the 2001 S Proof? Why so much for this? Based on Ecoinprices the mintage doesn't look much different from the 2002 proof???? Does anyone have official minatge numbers and can you provide insight into why so much for the 2001 Sac Proof? Does anyone think the 2007 Proof Sac will be lower than 2001 with competition from the Presidential dollars?
It's mintage is even higher than a few others. It's high becuase of speculation after the 2000 set, and it starting to wear off.
Everything in the 2001 set is expensive. Even the Statehood quarters in the 2001 set sell for about 55 bucks. No reason for this but they may come down over time.
My understanding is that the 2001 pf set was actually one of the lower mintages in the states quarters era, thus leading to the higher prices. Kind of the way the 97 was for a while
If people want it,then the price will rocket upwards. If they don't want it,then the price will shoot straight down. Aidan.
The demand seems artificial since the quantity produced should be nearly identical to other years. Artificial...in the sense people just looked for a date to hoard.
I was talking with my local coin dealer about this yesterday and he said that the 2000 coin sets were thought to be special because it was the turn of the millennium. Everyone bought lots of them and turned out that you can buy them for less than orginal cost today. He said that he had a box of 50 sets in the back room that he'd never get rid of. So I asked him about the 2001 sets and he said it was just people speculating that drove up the price and it just hasn't come down yet. I have all but the 2001 statehood proof quarters done in my 1932 - present Washington P, D, and S sets and I can wait for the 2001 set a while longer.
Aberlight,2001 is the first year of the millennium, which is why people want it.Out of all the Sacagaweas I've seen,I have seen 1 circulated 2001P Sacagawea. The 2000P Sacagawea turns up in Unc. over here,as the dealers bought up stocks & saved them up. Aidan.
Thanks. If the price comes down to $15 I may reconsider the 2001 proof and start a set. Who knows maybe the Homeshopping network cornered the market. Thats a joke....
It's too early in the series to call this an established key or even a semi key. At this point maybe, but they could punch these things out for decades. Never say never as Aberlight says. BTW I have three of them, what are they selling for these days?
I say they will never go below $50, and will probably go above $100 within 10 years. (I have a few so that may be wishful thinking, but I still stand by it).
2000 PR - 4,047.993 2001 PR - 3,184,606 2002 PR - 3,211,995 2003 PR - 3,298,439 2004 PR - 2,992,069 2005 PR - 3,273,000 I am willing to take yout bet that the 2001 will fall below $50. $50 for 2001 and $10 for 2004....There isn't much more difference between 2001 and 2002 mintages. AND 2004 IS EVEN LOWER. Once people start looking at the numbers the price will fall. There isn't anything unique about 2001. The only way I can understand the 2001 price is around 2002-2003 people speculated and now dont want to take their losses. Someday they will come back to the market. Not that I want to see people lose money, but it seems there is more money in the market than wisdom. If not this year than someday!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been looking casually at that Internet Auction Community for an 01-S and I have been seeing a gradual decline, especially with raw (unslabbed) examples. If I bet on a one horse race I would lose, but I think the indications are that the $100 price in the 2008 Red Book will turn out to be overstated.
A year and half or so ago they were selling for $80 - $90 - seems like they are heading the wrong direction.
