Has anybody seen the awesome new Jefferson/Buffalo nickel for next year? It's on the cover of the new Coinage Magazine. The new coin looks like a winner. Also there is a new portrait of Jefferson as well.

    Hello, David.

Yes, I have read the magazine, the press releases, and all the "chat" on the various coin forums.

IMHO, the two new reverse designs are pretty much, "more of the same", similar to what we see with the statehood quarter series.
I can't help but compare the new bison to Frasier's, which was far superior.
I will admit, however, that I get a chill whenever I read the words "Ocean In View, Oh The Joy", on the second reverse.

The new obverse is another story entirely.
The concept, of enlarging, and offsetting, Jefferson's poitrait, is nothing short of an artistic breakthrough in modern US coinage.

Of course, the graphic depictions are one thing, and modern high speed minted circulation coins are another.

Time will tell how well the designs translate onto the coinage.
Personally, I will be very surprised if they are anything to write home about.

I think CoinAge stated that the word "Liberty" is in Jefferson's handwriting, which I like.

I also like the obverse because of its fresh approach, and the reverse with the ocean view and Lewis & Clark notation.

I do like the new obverse but I can certainly predict that getting a ms67 coin is gonna be real tough with all that cheek there to collect contact marks...

I really like the new designs, and can't wait for my 2005 mint sets!

They could have done a better job witht the buffalo. It looks flat as a pancake!! I wish they could have brought back the 1913-38 classic. :(
