I'll send you all the finds. I just wanna go out there and find some old coins. I sold my detector and all my coins I have found over the years on the bay this winter. Bills!! I miss it bad but don't have the money to buy the top end model I'm used to. Can't go back to something less.
I found some great old coins detecting. Oh the woes of being the only bread winner with a wife and 3 kids. Well, at least I have more time to spend with them. But I do miss the detecting. Jim

You know, I can't help you. I wish I could. But, as a fellow coin geek and Michigander, I'd like some advice. My wife and I are both interested in the idea of going detecting, but we don't really know where to get started. As a kid, I had a cheap Radio Shack detector, but I never found anything but nails. :)

I know there are tons of threads out there, but what I'm looking for is a few pointers. I'd like to buy us one or two relatively inexpensive detectors and any associated necessary gear and get some ideas on where to head. Any advice would be really appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Fish

i should get my detector out and go use it.. i bought uit a few years ago and its just sitting there. My wifes family owns some land in the uper part of lower Michigan, and they settled the land 120 years ago. I bought the detector so i could wander the 120 acre farm looking for any dropped coins from way back when. I heard they used to burry a coffee can filled with whatever they had and bury it under a fence post.

Unfortunately, the whole family line that lived there has died. All thats left are descendants and their familys. They never had alot of money when they built the farm, just alopt of hard work; so i doubt i would find much, but it would be fun to try :)

Jim C, I'm sorry that you had to sell your detector. I always enjoy your posts of the coins lost in past generations. Cheer up there's always tomorrow. Your next detector will do more and go deeper.

ya, I know the feeling about being broke, at time's I'm so broke I can't even afford to pay attention :goofer: all kidding aside, the best I could do for you is send a speaker magnet and hope that you find steel coins, although you would have to provide the beeps and tones :D

Good luck with your quest for a donated detector.
I have been detecting since 1989, and still enjoy it, even when I don't do well, like yesterday.
Even with the rain from the last couple of days the beach was crummy, a lot of sand washed up.

Old home sites are the best places to go. With permission of course. I'm sure you know at least a couple people with homes dating back a ways. The front yards of thoses homes will have at least one old coin in the dirt for ya. One room school house sites. Old church lots. Old parks. Anywhere where people gathered back in the day. Half the fun of detecting is the research.
As far as detectors go I would buy a good mid range detector in the $300-$400 range. Whites, Fisher, other top model brand names. Ya need a digger, a pinpointer is a huge help but you may want to buy one of those after you find out if you really like detecting. They are like a mini hand held detector that helps you locate the item in the hole once ya start diggin.
You need to learn what your detector is telling you and that only comes by diggin and listening. About 30 hours with a detector and you should have a pretty good handle on what the thing is telling you.
Thats about all for now... I have been rambling enough. Jim
