    Hello -

I have a small (very thin) silver coin dated 1846.
It has an eagle with head towards the right holding a snake in its beak.
Printed around the outside top of the coin - Republica Mexicana
The reverse side has a "liberty cap" with flame like marking protruding outwards
towards the rim of the coin.
    On this side is printed - 1846 P.M.10 D ----G
    Between the D and G could be an s and a 20??
Preceeding the date (hard to read) is 1/2 R

I located another look alike coin that had "libertad" printed on
the hat but this coin is worn in that location.

Is this coin rare because of the date?

I would appreciate any information and value of this coin.

    Thank you in advance

Welcome aboard,Gram. Can you please post some photos? It really depends on the mintmarks as well as the condition of these early Mexican republican coins.

I guess it is a 1/2 real (the fraction is hard for me to read) from the first republic of Mexico, minted in Guanajuato. The letters PM are the assayers' initials. It is fairly worn and I'm guessing it would be worth no more than a few $. It is 90% silver. There are forum members here who know much more about Mexican coinage and can tell you more.
