Thank you all for giving me info on the Constantius II Pheonix - I found one on Ebay. Seller wanted 13$ or best offer. I offered 10.50$ and he sold it to me. I know crappy pics but is this worth it? (not like the 20$ one I found and was told it was too pricey) Like I said before - I collect ancients with bird themes. I should have asked your opinions earlier but when he agreed to 10.50$ I bought it! Oh - and free shipping.
Wait until you have it in hand before you judge whether it's worth it. But for $10.50 this looks reasonable, and if you don't like it, you haven't lost much money. A bird theme collection is an awesome idea, I'd love to see what else you have.
It's a decent coin at a fair price. As in all genres of collecting, grade and price always go hand-in-hand. The phoenix types were minted by Constantius II and Constans for the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Rome, so they are commemorative types.
Tell me bird lovers, is this worth $200? It's a purchase I'm considering.. I need to upgrade my Carus.
Maybe not to some here, but I would pay at least $150 or more for that bird. I like the way it looks, almost like that bird has some street cred and attitude.
It's steep, but not unreasonable, considering the eagle DIVO CARO types are scarcer than the altar types, and figuring in centering, strike, and full silvering. If I was looking to collect the best example of that specific coin, I could see myself dropping $200 on it.
Thank you all for your info - I really appreciate your knowledge and I will ask you before I buy ancients - hope I don't become a pain in the *ss!!
i agree ...i think that is reasonable markus. i'm not familiar with that coin greg...it's easy on the eye...but i don't know.
Concur with JA. If I were considering it, I'd ask for a bit of a better deal. Mine, bought 2 years ago, was $90 including fees and shipping.
I know you meant my ancients - sorry, but I love raising my runner ducks! My ancients are at the bottom of my safe - I'll dig them out later but now you will know why I love collecting ancient bird coins! These are some of my runner ducks!
Markus1959: you did well for the price IMHO No way is that coin worth $200. I think Z's price of $90 is more like it.
Yes, its worth the price. While it isnt the highest grade out there it is a nice solid VF well struck on a broad flan with some silvering to boot. If one researches auction prices you will see Fines around $60, VF to EF up around to $300. But, ancients are all in the eye of the beholder. Ask for a discount if any doubt.
Tbh I can't find anything else comparable on vcoins or eBay for a better price. I don't know where people are getting a comparable piece for just $90. I'll ask the dealer for a discount though.
VCoins has I think six of them on offer from various dealers, grades, etc. from $82 to $288. But as I mentioned ancients are very much in the eye of the beholder. Some can only see grade (or wear) but not see the surfaces, the centering, style, etc. For those the cheapest coins are usually fine and there is nothing wrong with that. But the coin in question here (which is not mine by the way) is a nice one for the reasons I already outlined. One could take their chances that a better and cheaper one may pop up in an auction, but that is a crap shoot and by the time you find a better one prices may have gone up.
