Here is a new addition to my collection. I actively collect the earlier coinage of Septimius Severus from the mint labelled by RIC as Laodicea-ad-Mare. These eastern style coins have obverse legends ending IMP II and IMP VIII. This new addition comes from the earlier IMP II issue and comes with the slightly more interesting aspects (at least to some of us) of a broken end to the obverse legend (IMP - II) and the slighty odd though not uncommon PERET for PERT. Of more interest to me at least is the reverse type, which has "Victory walking right, holding wreath in left hand, trophy in right". This would appear to be an unusual type for Septimius Severus and I have not been able to find one in any of the major references.

    Septimius Severus denarius
Obv:– L SEPT SEV PE-RET AVG IMP -II, laureate head right
Rev:– VICT-O-R AVG, Victory walking right, holding wreath in left hand, trophy in right
    Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 196
    Reference(s) – BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -

The only other example I have seen is the following one:-
Rev:– VIC-T-O-R AVG, Victory walking right, holding wreath in left hand, trophy in right
Which I bought from Barry Murphy

So there are two reverse dies but the type is still apparently quite scarce.

Some of you get such nice coins that I almost feel compelled to buy something nice whenever I see it just to make sure I can get it before you snap up your 7th or 8th coin of that variety for your massive ancient coin hoards.

That is an awesome little coin. Great purchase! :cigar:

I had not seen that pose for Victory but fail to see why anyone who did not already have several hundred Eastern denarii would think of going against Martin for such a coin. I recently saw (and passed on) a nearly mint state coin of the standard VICTOR AVG pose that I would expect to be much more popular among non specialists.

We still need the answer to the big question: What was the relationship between the mint that produced this coin and the mint that made the COSII issues?

    Great coin Martin!

Are there any other proposed mints for this series other than Laodicea-ad-Mare? The RIC volume for this issue needs updated badly!

Not stars but the tailing II at the end of the obverse legend.
