Hi, I have x3 variants of this token PE10-2 10-30 & 10-31. I was wondering if anyone has the knowledge of identifying the varieties of knows where I could find some references my searches online have returned fruitless. For the life of me I can't find a charlton catalogue in the UK ! I'm looking at buying this one but I don't see anything a great deal different to what I already have, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark.
You can get some info on the Coins and Canada website here: http://www.coinsandcanada.com/token...lonies-&-commerce-1/2-penny-1835&id=195#notes The site mentions several varieties of the ampersand. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/token...lonies-&-commerce-1/2-penny-1835&id=195#notes I can look it up in my Charlton when I get home in a few hours, that is if no one else comes along before then. There should be some sellers on Amazon that will ship to the UK.
Thanks ! I believe my previous attempt at 10-30 is incorrect too.. If I'm not mistaken 10-30 has a toothed reverse this is pelleted.
Gene or Doug should chime in soon. Both are token folk and will quote from their excellent references
Looked it up, appears to be PE10-31 - H mintmark, straight Brit flag, cut knob ampersand, toothed border reverse with double cut first S in SHIPS and last E in COMMERCE as well as incomplete center stroke in last E.
That's great thanks, I've just finished uploading pics of the other two and a better of this one.. At least I know not to waste my money on that one now ! I believe the nice example is also 10-31 unsure of the one with verdigris and obviously in the holder is 10-2. Which book are you using as a reference ?
I'm using Chartlon "Canadian Colonial Tokens" 8th edition. The 9th edition is the current one, but this one is just fine. Give me a minute on the other two, there are a lot of varieties for these.
Yeah I know, somewhere over 40 ! Ha ! I think 10-30 and 10-31 might actually be right. I've found the 9th edition for £33 shipped over here I'll have to invest in it. I've always been interested in the Canadian tokens after all !
Champion ! A nice surprise then ! It's sealed away in a saflip now to prevent the verdigris getting any worse.. I really think it looks good though !
Well that or PE10-23, I can't really tell from the pics if it's a cut or round knob on ampersand. If cut then the latter. Edit: Yea it has the nicked "E"'s
A few days soak in virgin olive oil and that surface verdigris will be gone, rinse under cold water using a soft tooth brush afterwards and pat dry with a paper kitchen towel.
Thanks for the tip but I do quite like it I've heat sealed it so it shouldn't be a further problem now
If you'd like I can send you over scans of the pages covering this token type, until you get a copy of the book.
Only as a last resort should you use a soft toothbrush on a coin. Granted, the bristles won't harm the copin, but the grit and dirt that is dislodged is then rubbed against the coin and tiny surface scratches result... and sometimes really noticeable.
The coin with the verdigris has already been cleaned, you wouldn't improve it much without going a bit ape on it anyway, may as well leave and enjoy it as is.
That would be amazing if you're willing to do that. I'll still be getting a copy though because I want all types from all provinces ha ! Thanks very much!
