I know that US coins are very popular, and i know that different series, and grades, and toning is also popular at different times. I was wondering if what was trending or popular in the coin market chances throughout different regions in america? Are there states, or regions in America where there is a denser amount of coin collectors than others?

I would guess that there would be more collectors per square mile in the state of New York than there would be in the state of Alaska.

Here in California (southern cali) junk silver is crazy. Dealers are asking for 14-15 times face value and many don't have many coins in stock. As soon as someone sells for 9x the dealer that same day would instantly sell if for a profit. At least many of the dealers that live within 30 minutes of me.

From what I have seen on Ebay, Pennsylvania has the most coin club medal issues since the 60's followed by California.

Thats interesting, i know that here in texas dealers have a lot of it, and you can get it for 13 face insted of 14-15 face, and they are offering 11.5 face as opposed to nine face. Thank you for your post! Why do you feel that there is a higher demand for silver in california as opposed to other parts of the country?

I am not sure. I know that when I am at the coin shops around here I see people walking in an buy one or two bullion coins and leave. Fractional silver is also very popular. It was weird because even though silver dropped from $16 per ounce to $14 per ounce I did not see much of a drop in prices. What some of them would pay dropped but their prices did not drop as dramatically. In addition, I sold about 7 tubes of silver eagles to my local dealer (who had multiple tubes of his own) withing a couple days everything was sold out. Many have trouble holding on to junk silver (high demand). Around me 2 shops sell 15x no negotiation. One sells for 14x but I was able to negotiate a better price. One sells for about 13.5x but I am able to negotiate a better price. The better price depends on how much I buy. In addition, CA charges sales tax on everything less than $1500.

Really, thats interesting, when I am at coin shows it seems that almost every dealer has silver. There is a normal amount of Standing Liberty Quarters where I am at, mabey they are all out east? or simply have became popular?

I asked a couple dealer and they said not one brings them in to sell. It's all Mercs, Franklins, and ton of Kennedys, Roosevelt, and Washingtons, more morgans and peace dollars then they know what to do with. Not that many walking liberties or standing liberty or Barbers.

There is one LCS by me that overcharges a bit for junk silver. I can't remember how much, BUT he lets you go through his junk silver and pick out what you want. The other 3 LCS's I go to don't let you do that. They ask how much you want, and they get it for you. Asking to see anything else, and they get irritated. I mean, why would you if you're going to make a sale? It's funny some dealers just have no customer service skills at all. Then there are ones, whom would sit and talk for hours about coins and teach you a thing or two. Just wish I had those kind near me.

Really, thats interesting. I went to a coinshow a couple of weeks ago and the dealer had a bunch of nice mercury dimes, franklin half dollars, even a few barber dimes and a couple of seated dimes. he was selling it for 13 face and was even willing to trade four silver washington quarters for ten silver dimes.

I think it is safe to say that colonials are likely more heavily collected on the east coast, while silver dollars despite being common everywhere seem to be more plentiful on the west. In currency National banknotes are more likely to be collected by the people of the geographic region that the bank was located.

I have been considering doing a short set of walking liberties for some time. The dealers around here don't seem to pay much attention to them. At the last local show I attended, I didn't see any at all. Lots of the above mentioned, along with slabbed bullion coins.:yack:
